I ran across this great new web site called www.valuemystuffnow.com (ValueMyStuffNow) where you can get cheap and fast valuations of your antiques, oil paintings, old books, etc. From what I read about it, the guy who started it used to be the head honcho for several years at some dept. at Christies Auction House in London before he retired and, according to their web site info, the experts who work on the site are mostly retired employees of Christies or Sotheby's, so they know what they're talking about I would guess. You can upload several photos (it looks like you can upload only one but you can just keep uploading different ones of the same item from different angles and it will upload several). It cost $5.99 to get a valuation on one item. They don't buy or sell or tell you where you can sell your item, but they do provide a free link to your valuation that you can post to an eBay listing if you decide to sell the item in question on eBay. I e-mailed photos and a description of one of my sister's old oil paintings she found at a yard sale for $2 and they answered me by the next day. The painting wasn't done by anyone famous but it was done in the 1800's or so, but since it was decorative only they said the value was lower, but they still said it was worth $200 to $400 at auction. So I was pretty pleased for my sis to hear that. You don't have to use my i.d. or anything here when you go to their web site, I'm not doing this for referral. I just was pleased with their fast response and valuation. I thought it was a good price for what I paid (I think you get cheaper rates if you buy more than one valuation at a time but I've only just done the one item so far). I just like to see a good company like this one crop up for people who love antiques as well as for "yard sale and thrift store treasure hunters" like yours truly.

Very cool. I will have to check it out. I know this post is old but I happened to see it and thought I would post something.
