Grounds for Termination?

I just received an email from an old friend; she's apparently just been fired from her job as an engineer for disclosing that she is transgendered. Because of our friendship, and probably a bit because I've just moved away from my hometown, she'd told me she was transsexual a few months ago. She continued to present as a male until after she'd consulted a therapist and started taking hormones. Her next step on the journey, having old friends and family, was to come out at work. She was promptly terminated and asked not to return to her lab. Her things were gathered by security and she was immediately escorted to the parking lot. Frankly, I find this kind of reaction shocking and disturbing on so many levels. That it's even legal is mind-boggling. I also now feel a little guilty because I'd encouraged her to be bold and now she's unemployed and probably a little bit frightened. What do you all think? Is it fair that she was fired?

Unless the job is gender specific (ie an actor playing a male part has suddenly turned female), I really don't think firing was right. The change isn't preventing her from doing the job, so what was the point?

I definitely do not think it was fair, it is horrible that she was treated this way! But like some other people already pointed out, if it is legal or not depends on the country where it happened, I guess. Where I live it would be illegal though! I hope your friend will be okay!

This is a very touchy subject and will elicit a wide variety of responses. Personally, I don't think something like that is anyone's business but those who are nearest and dearest to her. At the same time I have to ask what country was this in? Because I do believe it is illegal in the US and if it happened here, she would have some legal recourse. I don't agree with the whole transgender trend or the homosexual lifestyle. I am ultra-conservative but at the same time I also don't think anyone should be persecuted or denied a living because of what they do in the privacy of their own bedroom/bathroom. The right to earn a living is basic and should never be messed with.
