I am very feeling very relieved at the moment as last night my friend could have been killed. He is a taxi driver, and works for a small company in a small town. Last night his 2008 Ford Mondeo, started smoking from under the bonnet, after he had just dropped some people off at a restaurant. He was driving back to the town when it happened. He managed to stick his head out of the car window to get the car off the road, to see what was wrong under the bonnet, since the smoke was billowing out he could hardly see out the window in front of him. Just as he was about to stop, flames began coming out from the engine, and he stopped the car, and got out of the car as fast as he could, in the fear that it would blow. I also have to mention that my friend is disabled, as he has spina bifida, and he rely's on crutches to walk around as he can not walk without them, so as you can imagine it was a lot harder for him to escape the blaze. Thankfully though he managed to get out and stay out the way until the Fire Crew turned up (20 minutes later I may add!) I seriously get worried about some of these cars as the fire brigade have put it down to an electrical fault. All these new car seem to be run on computer systems now, and if this is the result of relying on computers to run a car, it is very dangerous.

Look at the front part of the car, even the front window was shattered from the fire. It was a good thing he managed to get out of his car before it ate him up too. That must have been adrenaline that helped him get out. Still, thanks God he survived the ordeal.

Yes the window shattered, as did the side windows, the dash has melted all over the floor, and the seats are all burnt and melted... have included here another pic of the inside.

hi rosie that was a fairly new car too.wow.I am so glad your friend managed to escape from that car in time. When you are physically disabled everything seems to take more time and I can imagine he did not have too much time to spare then, I hope the company that makes that car checks for faulty workmanship in that model of car before someone else gets burned or killed instead.

Very lucky... I took him to the car this morning... you can see him standing by it in the picture above... he was extremely lucky that he got our as quick as he did, I was actually on the phone to him last night when it happened, when he told me about it, I actually thought he was winding me up, because he does do things like that being a bit of a joker at heart, but when I heard the explosion and the sirens... I knew that it was true. I am very glad that he got out, it just goes to show that anything can happen in a car.

Due to you're friend's courage, he was able to escape such terrible accident. How is he? I hope, he won't be traumatized by this experience. The car manufacturer should look into this incident so it won't happen again. Not everyone is as lucky as your friend. I hope all is well :)

He is fine thankfully thanks... he is more upset that he is now unemployed, until a new car can be sorted out for him, it will take a while because of the insurance sorting it all out and then he has to have it modified with mobility hand controls so he can drive it, due to his disability.

That should be really a nightmare for him. I can understand his difficulty to get out of the car quickly when he smelled the danger. Thank god, he is safe. Sure, the advanced technologies used in the recent model cars are not resulting good. How did they release those models without the R & D department finding out such serious faults?
