Are there more people playing soccer now in USA? How does the World Cup influence the USA?

I think since 1994, USA has made steady progress in the world of football. Now their soccer league MLS is being looked at by European players. Till a couple of years back that was mostly a retirement spot for big name players. In the last one or two years one or two serious players have started looking at MLS as good league. If the league starts getting more good players, then it would really become competitive and help in the further development of the game in the USA. Cheers! Ram

The Americans are very strange people - when the World Cup was there in 1994, the football didn't get so big popularity but now when it's in South Africa the whole country is getting crazy.Of course that is for the results but...I don't know, a world cup in your country must grow the interest of football more than a qualifying to the 1/8 finals... The Basketball couldn't be replaced by football at least for now.

We have more soccer fans in the U.S. now but It won't pass basketball, baseball, or our own football in popularity.

Soccer is a very fast growing sport in America. More and more kids play it at school but the drive to play it at the highest level is still nothing compared to basketball. Keep in mind with all the South Americans moving into the US things are changing.

Unlikely it will have much impact. When they host the 1994 World Cup, people were saying that soccer will finally take roots in the United States. But it didn't. So, even with their current good run, I doubt it will be the number 1 sports in the country. Basketball and Football (NFL) will still have the priority.

Surely a good participation of the USA team in this world cup will encourage people to practice soccer. Although not being a sport of great tradition in the United States, soccer is gaining strenght due to good participation in recent competitions such as the confederetions cup, for example.
