Have you ever had to get rid of a beloved pet?

I've had my cats since they were kittens, the youngest of them is probably about 6 now. Unfortunately we may need to get rid of at least one of them due to circumstances beyond our control. I feel really badly about it, I don't want to have to get rid of any of my cats.. but I don't really see any other option at this point. It's so upsetting. Have you ever had to get rid of a beloved pet? What was the reason for doing so, and how did you do it?

Yep, I sure did. I had to get rid of a kitten that I had some years ago, back when I was living with my mom. We had been living at an apartment complex that had a rather strict no pets policy. Now, I probably would have respected the policy more, but as the landlord had 2 big Rottweilers in her apartment, which happened to be located on the premises and no bigger than the one my mom and I were in, it pissed me off to no end and I decided to get a cat of my own. Yeah, I know, not a smart move on my part, but what can I say? I was a teenager at the time! LOL Well, when the landlord found out we had a kitten, we were forced to get rid of it. My mom wound up taking it to her job. The last I heard this cat still lives there, though that was a few years ago. I doubt she's still alive anymore. It's funny, my husband and his family, who happened to live at the same complex at the time, had pets too. But I wasn't about to tell the landlord that! Whenever their cats were spotted by her, they'd just say that they were strays and that they were just giving them a bite to eat as they felt sorry for them. It worked like a charm every time too! Shoot, if only I would have thought of that, I probably would have done the same with the kitten that I had. Oh, before I forget, the last time I checked this same apartment complex now allows pets! All I can say is it's about time! LOL Happy mylotting! PS I'm almost afraid to ask, but did you wind up getting rid of any of your cats? Or were you lucky enough to keep them all?

Um, never mind. I think I already know the answer to that.

I had one who developed a peeing problem that we couldn't get under control and we gave the cat back to the guy we had gotten him from. I still miss him. :-( Please, please if you don't have somebody to give your cat to, find a reputable no-kill shelter that will find it a good home...

I still haven't mad the final decision as to if I'm going to get rid of them. I doubt someone would take them as they're full grown adult cats... but I figure when I decide to get rid of them, I will call the local Humane Association for advice.

Yes......my dog got cancer. I couldn't even do it myself. My son came as I was too torn up about it....I still cry six years later when I think of him....he was just the best!

We did have to do this once. We have 2 Dachshunds...Heidi is approx. 16 years old and Cooper who is 4. Two years ago we decided to get another. The reason was that Heidi is getting very old and we didn't want Cooper to be an only dog when Heidi passes. So we got another Dachshund, Buddy. Heidi and Cooper are short hair dogs and and Buddy was a long hair, chocolate brown. Little did I know that Dachshunds, depending on their hair color and length, can have very different personalities. I have had Dachshunds all my life but they have always been the short haired...laid back and trainable. Buddy was out of control, extremely hyper and complete Alpha personality over Cooper. He would constantly chase him and bite him. Fortunately, my ex-husband loved him, so he took him. So he is not "completely" out of the family but the kids were still pretty upset. I think we are done with getting dogs for now because I would hate to have to go through that again. Sorry to hear you might have to get rid of you cat:(

I have had cats my whole life.. I just can't pass up an adorable kitten. But I decided a few years ago that once my cats are gone, I'm done with pets for awhile. I'm realizing that I already have way too much responsiblity, and even though cats are pretty independent, they still require some care and attention, and I just can't give it to them anymore. I'm exhausted, and I have moments where I'd love to just get rid of these 3 and never worry about it again... but mostly I don't have the heart to do that, and getting rid of them will be a very hard thing to do.

Thankfully up to this point I've never had to get rid of one of my beloved pets. We currently have four pets total, two dogs and two cats (one being a kitten that we only got two weeks ago). That said, my husband doesn't like my hound dog because she is big and somewhat crazy. She does things to spite us when we don't pay enough attention to her and he would love for her to have a home in the country. I, however, can't do this because she is my girl, she will be eleven years old this year and I know that it would be difficult to find another home for her.

How long does that breed typically live for? Most cats can live to around 20.. though cats who go outdoors tend to live significantly less longer. My oldest is 9, and he once did have free roam of the outdoors, and only came in to eat or when the weather was bad. I figure he can't have too many years left in him, and probably won't get rid of him at all. The others are maybe 6 or so, and though they've been outside, they still have a long life ahead of them. So they are the 2 I'm debating getting rid of.

I know how it feels to lose a pet and have to give them up. I had to do so about six months ago with one of the cats I owned. The complex we live in only allows two pets, and we had three. We had gotten away with three pets for a couple of years, but our cat, Little bit (the one we got rid of) started to get seriously jelious of our cat Chinnia. He would poo and pee on the carpet so much that they declared our apartment a toxic dump. So we had to get rid of the cat, and get the carpet cleaned. My partner George (who I live with) and I called all over and he would walk up to aquentances and ask if they wanted a cat. I even posted adds online. However, we ended up having to eventually take him to pet smart, (rather an adiptions lady) took him to pet smart, where he is now.

So sad.. I probably won't get rid of my cat unless I can find a really good place for him to go. I don't want to spend the rest of my life wondering if I did the right thing.

We've gone through quite a few dogs that we've had to get rid of for one reason or another. Some of them we didn't have very long. Two dogs we had to get rid of because they started acting up when I got pregnant. I don't know what it was but they were great dogs till I got pregnant and then they went nuts. It was hard to get rid of them but I had to do what was best for them and us. I was careful about who I gave them to. I made sure they had good homes where they would get the attention they wanted.

i am so sorry. It is awful to have to get rid of a pet. Because of my parrots I never had cats but had many dogs. I don't remember what happened to our dogs on the farm - I expect my son just gave them away to other farmers. That was a bad time in my life and I have blocked it out. Will pm you

I'm not a big dog person. We've tried to have a couple over the years, but it didn't work out and I gave them away within a few months. I didn't feel badly for them. I did my best to ensure they went to a good home. But with a cat I've had for at least 6 years, I feel differently. These cats are part of my family.. it's so hard to think of getting rid of them, but also impossible to think about keeping them.

That has never happen to me but it happened to some friends I know. Last spring my friends 2 cats were starting to pissing all over the house! Both cats are spayed females who were house cats but were in and out during the summer. No matter what they did the cats continued to pee in the house. My friends had thoughts of putting them down or be given to the humane society! I said don't do that! They would be good barn cats! I work at a horse stable which has cats of course! All of them have been fixed. I talked to the owner and she said ok as long as they were healthy and fixed! No problem! The cats Zolla and Jane took 2 weeks to get adjusted but today they are happy and healthy! It was a good thing that turned out great!

I have that same problem with one of my male cats who is fixed. Years ago when we had a terrible flea problem I couldn't control, I decided to get rid of 2 of my 4 cats to be better able to afford flea prevention. The youngest of the cats was given to my sister in law who had a barn at the time. Unfortunatly not too long after the cat was hit by a car, and I was very sad.

I had a pomerian poodle for 17 years. She has cancer and kidney stones as well as really bad cataracts. She was in such bad shape and my mom said she had to go. When my mom told me this was going to be Sparkles last day i was so upset i couldn't function and so unhappy and crying all day. You get so attached to your animals you never want to see them go. She was my everything and we had so much fun with her when i was growing up. I guess you always have to know i the back of your head that your animals don't last as long as you do.

Sorry for your loss. I am okay with the thought of losing an animal to old age or other natural causes. I've lost many this way.. they all lived to be over 15 years old. The oldest of the cats I have now is only 9.. so they still have life ahead of them.

...Hi katsmeow, Sorry about your cats, you do become very attached to your pets, it's sad when something happens to them. I would go over to my girlfriend's house and she had five or so cats. This one cat, Mariner would jump on my lap whenever I came over. She said that I should take him home, I hesitated and finally one day I took him to my house. He hid from me at first because it was a strange place and he missed his family. But he got used to it and we became good buddies. I live in a very old historical house, and it is my thought that he ate some paint chips when he would sit in the window. He got very sick and passed away. I am getting sad now. I cried my eyeballs out almost, he was such a nice cat. I so wish I had left him where he was, he would probably still be alive and well. Take care, good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear that. That's heartbreaking. I remember us getting rid of a dog we had when I was a little girl. We moved to a smaller house with a smaller yard and he kept running away. He also kept breaking things in the house and kept trying to get our other dog lost. So my family gave him away to another family with a ranch. It was better for him. Lots of places to run and stuff. But that was very hard for me to understand as a little girl. As a grown up, I haven't had to give any pets away and I'm very grateful. Things have just happened to work out. But I understand having to do what's right by the pet and what's right for you too.

We were once in a similar situation with a dog, but we hadn't had him for very long. Still it was hard on my son.

i have this cute little cat and she had several kittens, i used to have them around the house when i was in high school but then there came a time where my sister had an asthma attack and the kittens fur caused it and because my mom got so worried for my sister's health so then she decided to give our cat and our kittens away. i felt so bad about it but my sister's health is our priority. lately i just discovered that the family whom we had given our cats had lost them all. and until now i feel bad about it, i miss my cats! =(
