I know it's wrong but my boss told me to do it... will you?

There was an incident I recently encounter which only proves that people who really want to step up and be recognized will do everything even if it is wrong to do so or let's just say violating certain rules. Funny how people think this way. Keeping all the problems, and even asking their subordinates to do so.
How will you react on this? Will you do whatever your boss asked you to do even if you know that it's wrong?

hi there.
for instance i see that this is happening inside the workplace, i guess i dont have the right to reprimand or even give my opinion to the person involved. things like these are too personal. if they do not directly affect me, i guess it is just out of respect to not comment or what.
however, if a boss would hit on me and give me such generous benefits, i still wouldn't buy it. respect for myself is way more expensive that promotions and money. i know my worth. i've worked my way to get a decent job. and am leaving (in my right time) with a decent dignity. in the first place, practically speaking, the boss doesn't have the money. he is just the boss in a department. my pay doesn't come from him.

Hi Jhodevera,
Hiding a wrong doing, a material mistake, a forgery or fraud or anything that went against the rules with no intentions of revealing the same for fear of repercussions of a disciplinary action such as grave punishments and high penalties basically constitutes a crime of concealment.
Technically speaking, concealing is different from that of holding the truth until such time that it is appropriate to let it out in the open.
But holding back a truth that you essentially know beyond doubt, could become a vital key for which magnitude will make a major impact to the decision making procedures of the management thus saving the company from significant damages and adverse effects in the long run, would also constitute a crime of concealment.
These are clearly deceitful acts that I always watch out for as I used to be an auditor for a number of years, and as with any CPA with professional ethics, I always uphold what is the proper way of doing things and I will go by the principle of truth and honesty in any job I do. After all, why do anyone have to hide something if it is not essentially wrong in the first place? Therefore, if I am the one in your shoes, I would definitely not allow my boss to push me around and make me do something that is no doubt out of the normal even if it would cost me my job. But of course I will always give him the chance to change his mind and reason out with him that it may not be a bright idea to conceal things and violate the rules. I always give my boss the proper respect but when I know he is no longer doing the right thing and insists on doing what he has set out to do that would jeopardize others's welfare, I will never allow myself to be an accomplish to his crime whether it is against the company, co-employees or the clients we serve.
Sorry if this is rather long. Have a nice day!

well, he may be your boss but definitely not the one in control of your conscience. If you know that what he tells you to do isn't right, you can always say no. Just like if he tells you to jump off a high rise building, will you say yes just because your boss said so? I'm just saying, this is a free country, why not use your freedom at the same time your logic. make sure, your decision is always what keeps you with a peaceful mind.

There are two situation that we need to consider.
1. Is the instruction you thing that is wrong because you have difference opinion with your boss?
2. The instruction is actual violating the rules, and what are this rules, it that very serious if violate it?
As an subordinate to somebody (boss) there is a basic rule we should follow, that is we have to work at the same frequency with boss, otherwise we will never grown in the company.
So, you have to make a judgement, if the answer is no. 2, than better find a new job.

I would honestly won't do anything that would compromise anyone, that includes me and those that would be affected by the action, especially if it obviusly isn't fair and would benefit individuals who don't deserve the credit.
I would stand my ground and explain as thoroughly as possible why I would not like to follow such instructions and insist on an alternative that would be fair for everyone involved.
If ever I would be terminated from work due to such reasons, I will not regret and would even relate it when asked by possible employers that would question the nature of my termination from the previous work.

I know its important to do what you are told, but there comes a time where its time to draw a line. If you know something is wrong, and it makes you the least bit uncomfortable, then its wise not to do it. Even if you risk your job. No job is worth that. You have to stay true to yourself and not do anything that could make you too uncomfortable. If your boss is asking you to do something wrong, then he, or she shouldn't be in a position of power.

Nope I won't do it if I know its wrong. I won't work for someone that do wrong things. I'll just resign if he/she insisted on me to do it. I can earn money buy doing it in the right way.

I'll say NO right then and there! Ooops, easy for me to say indeed but maybe hard for me to do. I haven't encountered such clear yet bewildering situation yet. If I were you, I'd just bear in mind the saying "What goes up must come down". Your boss might enjoy his comfy chair as of the moment but bad karma awaits him in the next room. Just follow what your conscience is telling you girl. I bet she's saying NO as well. It's best to live with peace of mind. Good luck =)

It depends.
If my boss would ask me to do something that would be beneficial for all... as long as it is not illegal, maybe I would reconsider. But if he would ask me to cover up his wrong activities, that would be a different thing.
Guess, this would be an issue if what would be morally acceptable to you or not.

If that will happen to me, I would definitely say No. I am not a type of employee who would just say Yes to a boss even if I knew it is wrong. In my previous work, I always spoke what's on my mind, I even have told my boss that she is wrong and she thanked me for that. This is just me, I have follow a constructive principles in life.
