England and Spain in the final? I can dream, can't I?

I'm English and I live in Spain. I'm also an optimist and a bit of a dreamer, so what I'd love to see is a Spain - England World Cup final. It was great here last night - as soon as the final whistle blew, there were fireworks going off, car horns blowing, and all sorts of noise. The Spanish know how to celebrate - even in our small village!
Okay, it may not be on the cards, but the last time I was in Spain and England played in the World Cup, we won! I was 14 in 1966, and we were staying in a hotel comprised of English and Germans. The atmosphere was great, and even the Germans thought the Geoff Hurst goal was good.
Who would you like to see in the final?

Hello, Guderian. Oh well, it was a nice thought while it lasted. I think you're right - Spain will beat Portugal. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for England - and Spain - I have divided loyalties!

Well, I was born in 1966 but I reckon my brother was a World Cup baby as he was born 14 months later in 1967 lol.
I would like England to play Japan in the Final...'cos we can beat them!
In the past I have adored Brasil but they are far too negative...their game against Portugal was pants...so I don't want either of them in the Final thank you.
We will meet the Argies in the quarters once we get past the Germans...but they have to beat the Mexicans first.
It's wide open this year and I don't think the surprises are going to end any time soon.
I do like watching Spain so if England don't get to the Final I will cheer them on..or the Argies, although the a*se licking the commentators do for Maradonna is shameful. Don't they remember what he did all those years ago? Hand of God and all that!
COME ON ENGLAND!

Hello, Janey. Sounds like your Dad put one in the net, as well as Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. As you say, the surprises are not over yet. It's been a really disappointing World Cup up to now, but hopefully, things will improve now we're in the knockout stages. After all, there are no second chances now, so if a team goes behind, they've got to come back or take an early bath.
I agree with you about the commentators and Maradonna. The Argies have always cheated, and always fouled - Rattin in 1966 was a good example, although if he hadn't been sent off, I don't think England would have beaten them. I like your England - Japan scenario, but I can't see Japan getting that far. I'm surprised they're still in it.

Hey we're about the same age - I was on a French Exchange when the 1966 World Cup was on.
The day of the final was my last day and I listened to the final in French on a tour around Paris!!
Obviously I would LOVE to see England in the final, preferably against the local blind school!!!
No an England Spain final would be great ( but I think I am being VERY optimistic!!)

Hello, Sue. Well, the way they played against Algeria, a team of dustbins could have beaten them! Yes, I think it's optimistic as well, but I can dream! So we're the same age? Must have been a very good vintage, 1952.

It would be nice to see Argentina vs Brazil! or Portugal Vs Brazil. Or Spain. As long as, it is a great match I do not see any problem with it. But, I hope Argentina goes to the finals.

Hello, Jacobus. It seems certain there'll be at least one South American team in the final. As you say, the important thing is that we get a good match. After all, it's the greatest soccer tournament in the world, and the fans deserve the best. Up to now, it hasn't been that good.

You can dream... as long you do not expect it to be fulfilled :) I think England will get past Germany with Rooney being very instrumental in the game. But they will not go on to beat Argentina if they book their quarterfinal spot. On the other hand I pick Spain to make the semis after which it would be difficult to predict who will win!!
Cheers!

Hello, Ram. It's about time Rooney did something - he's done nothing to help the team yet. I think we can beat Germany, as long as it doesn't go to penalties. I was talking to some Spanish friends yesterday, and they don't think Spain will go through - they don't think they're playing well enough. I think we're in for some more surprises along the way.

Hello, Dawn. Well, the dream is over, for England and the USA. And when it comes down to it, we've both been cheated, because our teams have not performed to their potential - or their hype. I shall now console myself with industrial quantities of vodka. There's always a bright side, isn't there?

Well being English, a patriot and a believer I have to say England in the final against, well I am not too bothered but if it worked out by some miracle it was the USA I would love it.
The thing is that I do believe England could get to the final because whilst we may struggle to get the goals we are a hard team to score against, ignoring goalie blunders and dodgy balls.

my response is Germany and Argentina. I really appreciate delicate soccer tenique of Argentina as well as dogged and union spirit of Germany. But probably it will be a quite difficult problem to decide which side I am in favor of at that time .Each side out will frustrate me a bit more or less.I am afraid the same contradiction to you, right? I mean, both sides are your favourites.

Hello, Rolento. Yes, Spain were nowhere near as good as when they won the European Championship. Then they looked unbeatable, now, the just look average. The European teams seem to be strugglng this time, so let's hope things can improve. There are no second chances now we're in the knockout phase.

Hiya Sandra,
When I was watching, well half watching the final Match of Spain against the others and nothing was happening I thought oh no they are going to do it again blow it.
Sat down for the last half an hour of it and I knew from the way the Game was going who was going to score that Goal we so badly needed and it was him good old Iniesta. My Husband said no it will be Torres and I looked at Torres and thought no it´s going to be Iniesta and there you have it all packaged up.
So I got up again as I had to and said you´ll see Iniesta is going to score pretty soon and he did (grin). Rough guess? No just a feeling I had that it would be him.
Yeah and we had all those fireworks going off right outside my Kitchen Window which is on Ground Level as well and the Bars had got the Doors open and turning the Television up when they almost got to score a Goal and they did´nt.
We had the lot too don´t worry they don´t do things by halves.

Hello, Lovingangelsinstead. Yes, it was a great night. I thought Iniesta would score if anyone did, as well. As you say, they don't do things by halves. Somebody should have told us to pack earplugs when we moved here! Still, it's great to see people enjoy themselves without spoiling things for everyone else, and everyone gets caught up in the atmosphere.

Hiya Sandra,
Yes I could have done without all the Jumping Jacks though. I was getting really fed up of them. We had them right outside the Kitchen Door on ground level and they make a hell of a racket as well.
I had a hunch Iniesta would do it pity I could not have bet on it as that would have made me a penny or two. I once said Red Run would win and he did but I could only put a fifty pence coin on it. You should have seen the envy on their Faces all because I won two quid I ask you but I enjoyed it and it was lot´s of fun too.
I never bet but I would not have minded just this time.
All the hype was Torres and I thought no Iniesta is the one and it was ha ha.

Hello, MDG. I'm hoping Spain will beat Germany, but I don't think it will happen. This World Cup has been so full of surprises, though, that anything is possible. Who would have thought Argentina would lose so spectacularly to Germany?

It does sound like an ideal final but i think that now England only managed to finish second in their group that they are scheduled to meet in the semi finals. So England will beat Spain in the semis and then Brazil in the final. All this after we have knocked Germany and then Argentina out of the cup. Easy :)

Hello, Glenn. Yes, it's probably a big ask for us, but hey, we knocked out Germany and Argentina once before, you know! I know they can't meet - it would have been a great game, though. Maybe next time - provided my nerves can stand the strain tomorrow.

Well, the US lost today so we are out, but then again, I think we did better than anyone (including us!) expected. While I think your dream teams match up would be fun, I think it's going to be a South American country in there, maybe Argentina or Brazil. I'm just saying....

Hello, Art. Sorry your team are out. They played well, though, and as you said, they got further than anyone expected. I agree there'll probably be a South American side in the final. I just hope it's not Argentina. Maradonna is arrogant enough already, and the commentators fawn over him. He was a great player, but he was a dirty player as well.

I hate to inform you this my friend that it is impossible for Spain and England to meet in the finals in this tournament because they belong in the same bracket. They could meet in the semifinals though provided they win their next two games. For me i would like to see Netherlands vs England or Netherlands vs Argentina in the finals with Netherlands lifting the trophy.

Hello, Bretski. Yes, I know it can't happen, although it could have, if England had won the group. I think the Netherlands are certainly the best European side this year, so they deserve to be in the final. Not Argentina, though. They may be playing well, but I don't like their tactics.

I am afraid on my own tought that England will never reach that far, not when you have good teams such as Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal excells at offensive tactics (for example the 7-0 against Korea), Brazil at defending tactics, Argentina is better at dominating tactics, do u still think England his going to be able to pass trought them all?

Hello, Lakotta, and welcome to MyLot. Yes, you're probably right. I don't think England are good enough to get that far, but I have to cheer them on, and I have to hope - along with all the other England supporters.
