I have just reponded to a discussion about favourite books when we were children. Now in my case I had a VERY long way to think back But when anyone asks me this I always respond with the book 'The Wide Wide World', I know that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it over and over. All I can recall from it is something about material for a dress!! ( It was almost 50 years ago!!) I didn't know ho wrote this book and I didn't even know if it was around. So I did a search and found out that Susan Warner's The Wide, Wide World was f published in 1852 and classed as America's first bestseller. I have even found it for sale on Amazon so I am going to buy a copy and re read it and pass it down to my granddaughters!! Thanks for recalling this memory to me myLot!! Have any of you read or even heard of 'The Wide Widw World'?

I have never heard of it, myself. It sounds like fun. I remember my school teachers reading Dr. Seuss to the class a lot but the one book that stands out in my mind was one that my fourth grade teacher read to the class which totally traumatized me, "Where the Red Fern Grows". I was a sensitive child and broke into tears right there in class. Needless to say, I was teased no end by the other kids. LOL...as an adult I have never been tempted to read the book, myself, or to read it to my daughter. Mind you, I cried for Charlotte's Web, too.

I had never heard of it, before, but I know what it is like to find an old friend in a book. At Thanksgiving we went to antique stores with my brother and his wife. I found a new copy of an old favorite of mine. Children's Classic Version of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, I did not even remember the name. I do remember the illustrations and stories, and now I own it. Another place, besides Amazon, to find out of print books is A Libris.

Are you talking about Americas First best Seller published in 1850 and written by Susan Warner??? but it is a story of a girl who has to live away from her parents and Christianity.

Yes, I'm sure it is the one, as I say I can remember very little just snatches from it. But yes the girl did have to travel away from her parents I remember.
