Well in general all the major are great. At the entry level, there is not too much difference between the models.
For a beginner, I would recommend the following
Pentax KX
Nikon D3000 or D5000
Canon XS ( some great deal on this camera now)
Olympus E-420
Sony A230
All of these models can be found for under 500. None is really that much better than the other, so don't worry that much about choosing one over the other.
What you really need to consider though in a camera is ergonomics. It is important that the camera fits comfortable in your hand. The controls and menus should also be logical to your needs. The camera is just a tool and it need to be a tool that you feel comfortable with.
So go out and try some cameras out. Good luck and I hope this was some help.

All of them in the market are just comparable with each other and what you need to realize is how comfortable you are with the grip on your hands and with the menus with your fingers. I would suggest that you try them with your bare hand you you'll gonna know what fits for you and what's comfortable. Most of the entry level DSLR are with in each others price range, meaning, not big in difference. Another thing that you must also to consider is the after sales or the tech support of the product that you are buying, make sure that it is available in your area that you don't have any difficulty when you have a problem with your cam.

Heya. :)
I have been into Canon, so I'll be suggesting canon stuff for you mate. One of the most popular choices would be Canon 1000D / Rebel XS or if you have a few bucks to add, the Canon 450D/ Rebel XSi. I have tried handling the aforementioned models, and it has been a delight. :)
But do not limit yourself with these suggestions. As what they say, to each his own. Canon may be the brand for me, but the others prefer Nikon. I cannot say which one is number one. In the end, it is all up to you.
Good luck!

Hi screwdriver
You should go for Nikon or Canon
I started in 1958 with a Kodak box camera, that handled 620 black and white roll films, next was Agfaiso, bellow extension type, that used 120 black and white rolls, next was Rolliflex SLR
I now have the latest 15mega pixel digital lol
Thanks for sharing
Cheers.
HAVE A NICE SUNDAY.
God Bless.

Yes, I agree. I think Nikon is a good brand. You can check out Nikon D5000. It has some features that the Nikon D90 has but for a cheaper price.
I am actually also planning to buy my own Nikon D5000. I'm still waiting for the loan my godfather has agreed to give me. :)
