Some Advice Needed about Wii

Hi everyone, A friend of mine was telling me about her Wii that she and her husband uses regularly and every time I have contact with her, she is telling me that I simply must get a Wii. When I look though, I am in two minds because the machine itself is expensive and then I will have to pay for the games and other things. Now I am not heavilly into games but don't mind playing one now and again. I have started this discussion to try and get the views of any Wii user on myLot and would like to address the following things. Is it worth getting a Wii if you don't play to many games? I understand that using a Wii can be a great way of getting exercise and can be very motivating. Is it worth buying for this alone? If you have a Wii, I will be interested to learn of your experience with it... Thanks. _Derek

I really like the Wii, but I also love the Playstation as well and have always enjoyed this type of gaming. I do not go on these games daily, or even weekly. My kids spend much more time on them than I do these days, but I do still enjoy them when I play them. The Wii is great for exercise, not just those exercise programs either, most of the basic games that come with the console like Tennis and boxing will get you sweating nicely. You do have to be careful with some of the games though. I would advise warming up and stretching before playing them or you could hurt yourself.

Thanks for responding Bill. Yes, there certainly seem to be some good exercises that can be done with the Wii. I am used to exercising although I find it pretty boring in the gym, that is why I have been thinking about a Wii... There is so much "for" and "against" though. Like what if I spend all that money and then start procrastinating and not exercising! I will get to a discussion... one day! _Derek

Thanks for your response Bill. It's nice to know that there is someone else out there that really hates gyms. I don't think exercise does you much good unless you enjoy it.

I find Gyms boring too Derek and I hate using dirty sweaty equipment that someone else has just used. I am currently doing a workout program at home called P90X. It is really fun and pretty hard going, but I am enjoying the challenge. It is a great mixture of cardio, stretching and weight training. I am especially liking the fact that I can do it in my own home in front of the TV with minimal equipment and I am seeing results!

I would strongly suggest that you either go to your friend's house and play some of the games with them or ask if you can borrow it and try it on your own. That way, you can get a feel for it and see whether or not it would be something that you might be interested in. I know that you said you are not really into gaming, but you might change your mind when you try these games. Also, I have the Wii Fit Plus, and I love it! I don't really use it as much in the Summer, because I can get outside and get exercise, but in the Winter I play it all the time. There is a really good boxing workout that I like, and I have another boxing game that you "fight" in a match, and your opponents get tougher the more you win. It is a great workout, and it also helps to relieve stress and anger.

Thanks for posting and making some good suggestions there. The problem is with going go my friend's house is that it's around 150 miles away! However, I've got a birthday coming up in early October and I will be dropping a few hints... _Derek

Derek - Yeah, 150 miles is quite a drive just to try out a few games. I hope that the hints are noted, and you find that you really do enjoy the Wii. Let us know whether or not you get it and if you like it, please. Alice - There are some outdoor sports that are fun, but it is normally too cold to do them for any amount of time. Besides, if it is too cold and windy, then my little one and I have problems breathing in Winter. Being able to workout inside is definitely better, because it is never too cold and you don't have to worry about the weather.

As all things go, it is a great addiction when you first buy it. However, it does lose it's allure, but I find it still just as fun to use, even if I don't use it all that often. You can play older nintendo games on it, and you can now even watch movies from netflix on it. If you're not a big video game player I would first suggest just going to the nintendo website and looking through their catalog to see if any games do catch your eye, they even show games not yet released I believe. If you have friends, neighbors, and family that might like to play a game on it then that is another thing to consider, but my first suggestion is to look through and see if there's any games, or anything about the system that you think you'd enjoy.

Thanks for posting. I have decided to wait for my birthday in a few months and drop some big hints. I know what you mean about gadgets losing their allure though. I have a Yamaha electric piano that has got every sound on it you can think of. I am a trained pianist, but I really have to discipline myself to sit down and play it.. I do most days, but I have known myself to not play for around a month. Not a good thing to do if your a musician of any sort I don't think! _Derek

It might not be advisable since you don't sound like a gamer. I'm not saying that you shouldn't get it or anything but it would be a pretty expensive investment. Besides the system and the games there are a bunch of accessories that you might have to buy for specific games. Don't know if you want to spend all that money to get some exercise. For myself, the Wii is a great gaming system. My siblings and I like to get together a lot so the Wii is an ideal for us because it has many multiplayer as well as party games. There's four of us and a lot of Wii games are geared toward 4 players so that's good for us. Although we do have to spend a bit extra buying different accessories for all the games we have (like the steering wheel used when playing the Mario Kart game).

Thanks for posting.. Yes, you are perfectly correct. It sounds like fun to play with your siblings, but all of us have long since been married with homes and spouses of our own. We did get together a few summer ago and I thoroughly enjoyed a game of badmington. It really brought back memories of our youth. No, a Wii is far to expensive when they hardly ever come to our house, and we are both so tired after working all day and we just like to crash out in front of the TV. _Derek

Hey derek_a, I have had a Nintendo Wii for a few months now and I enjoy playing it every so often. I currently have two games for it. Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. Animal Crossing is fun but it gets boring after a while, it's sort of a sad version of an RPG (Role Playing Game). But Mario Kart is a blast! It's bay far my favorite game. It's a classic Nintendo Racing game that adds hours of fun to any Wii! When you purchase a Wii it will usually come with Wii Sports which is a very fun set of games. It includes a variety of sports games such as baseball, tennis, boxing, golfing, and more. So even if you do not have the money to go out and buy a game right a way, games are usually $30+, then you will still have something fun to play! So those are my thought about my Wii, if you have any questions about it. Please ask! -BestComputerGeek

Thanks for posting the information about the games you play on your Nitendo Wii. You certainly make them sound like fun, which has given me something else to think about. I don't usually go for games but the Sports games seem as if they will involve some exercising, which can be healthy. _Derek

In my opinion, the Wii is worth buying for the Wii Fit or Wii Fit Plus alone, as that is mainly what we use ours for. If you just want to play the usual kind of games, a PS3 is better, I would say, but the Wii is the best for the sport and exxercise kind of games.

Personally we really enjoy our WII. We do go thru streaks now when we are actively playing games and such on it, but overall it is a Great thing to own. If you are like a lot of people you can usually find the games second hand now a lot of places and it is a Great way to get some excercise. And with the prices coming down and package deals from time to time you can't go wrong with that.
