What are your thoughts about homeschooling?

I have recently been reading about homeschooling and I am very interested about it. I want to homeschool by youngest son because I am getting frustrated with the schools that are available now for my eldest daughter. I feel like my daughter is not getting the optimum learning environment from that schools that she previously attended. I am considering homeschooling as an alternative for my son, at least for his preschool years. What are your thoughts about homeschooling? I have read a lot of things about it... pros and cons, but I haven't really seen or heard it for real(like in person).

I am a homeschooling mama who just finished our nineteenth year of homeschooling. My first totally homeschooled child about to start his last year of law school at Virginia law. Another child is about to start his second year of college at the University of Texas in Austin. A grown daughter who only homeschooled a few years is a paralegal. I have another grown son who works in an organic butcher shop. I began homeschooling because of the things my oldest daughters were exposed to and did because of the horrible moral climate in public schools. We tried private Christian schools for a while, but they are terribly expensive and not a whole lot better. So I brought the older ones home, and we began our homeschooling adventure (I have ten children, seven biological, three young ones adopted from the foster care system) There are many public school teachers in my family who said my children would not be socialized, would miss out on a lot and not be normal, would never get a good education, etc. etc....My children have surpassed their children in all those areas! It just took a lot of years for the fruit to show. I stayed strong against all the opposition, and am so GLAD I did! We use the Robinson curriculum - you can find that online - and our school never lasts more than two hours a day. I am a homemaker and wife as well as a school teaching mom, and I have a lot of things to do!

Thank you for that. I really admire moms like you who are not only homemakers but teachers as well. You take on such a big responsibility and I understand that this role is not for everyone. It takes a lot more than being a mom, not to mention that being a stay at home mom is difficult enough. I admire it and I aspire to be one but I find it very scary. But I really want what's best for my children and something in me is saying that there is something much more that what they're having right now. Nevertheless, thank you for those enlightening and encouraging words. I appreciate it very much.

Mathamatic, science and language are not only things to learn. a child should learn to cope with other people. so school is the suitable place for learning. So think twice before deciding. My daughter is so good in studies. but in every report I saw one line:her friend circle is not enough. hear in Germany that is very important than text books and lessons.

well as long the student doesnt feel that its a vacation then yes. But i think going to school is really much better than homeschooling. Socializing with other people is not something you learn at home.

I have to differ with you there. I've never met a home school family where the children thought it was a vacation, and I've known many home school families. How many do you know? I also disagree that children cannot learn to socialize with other people at home. Children learn to socialize with their families, and this helps build strong families. Also, children who learn at home do not have to be isolated. They still can play with other children in the neighborhood, be on soccer teams, join the scouts, and interact in church groups. My son's social life really took off when he started home school in grade 5. By that time he'd been in both public and private schools.
