Do Your Eating Habits Change Along With The Seasons?

Here in the UK we can buy virtually anything all year round so are very lucky that way. However, I would much prefer a beef and salad wholemeal sandwich (which is very filling according to "experts") than a full, cooked meal during the hot weather we are experiencing at present. I still (or John does at weekends sometimes) cook, seemingly all year round which is fine but I'd love sandwiches now and again! I often joke that due to John's height he has at least 6 stomachs so I don't suppose a beef salad sandwich would "do it" for him despite what the experts say. So, what happens in your house during the hotter months? Is it barbeques and beer or the healthier option? Either way, I wish it would rain! Amazingly, we are due a hosepipe ban here in Cumbria despite floods of "biblical proportions" a few months ago. We supply water to Manchester and other areas of the North West but I don't use a hosepipe on my plants anyway, I use a rather ace bright pink watering-can from Wilkinson's. Haha!

Yes it has to, there is no way out coz here we get seasonal vegetables.Winters is the best coz at that time we get sufficient vegetables and also our appetite increases i believe. But in summers its horrible in India. We dont get enough things to eat.We keep on rotating the same stuff after every two and three days.Dont feel like having food also. Here there is no rain til now.Scorching heat.

I do sympathise with you having to put up with the searing heat in India. We start moaning when it gets above 20 degrees C...double it where you are I would think? That will put things into perspective. What temperature is it now? Does it cool down at night? I hope it cools down for you soon my friend. It comes as no surprise to me that you don't feel like eating when it is so hot.

Thank you! I like interacting with everyone who is friendly, not bothered where they are from.I am so sorry that the temperature remains so high during the night-time as well. Your poor baby, I hope the conditions improve soon. Sorry for being naive as we only hear about the weather when the rains come in your country but how far off is it? Does that provide some sort of relief or are you at risk of flooding when it happens? Do you have such a thing as a wintertime? I'd be interested to find out as, like I say we are a bit naive in this country as to the conditions you have to put up with on a daily basis.

When it is very hot, we tend to eat more cool meals. Sandwiches are alright, especially one like you describe. We definitely eat more fruits and vegetables and more cold meals in the summer. We went to a barbecue place hubby wanted to try the other night. I had a salad, with smoked chicken strips on it. Overpriced, but both elegant and filling. It was spinach leaves with sliced fresh strawberries, canned mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, candied walnuts and crumbled bleu cheese, topped with about three ounces smoked chicken. A fruity vinaigrette dressing. Delish, but hardly worth what I paid for it.

i think we switch more to cold foods or barbeque outdoors in summer. it gets so humid here the last thing you want to do is heat up the house further. and as my room is over the kitchen,i'd say definetly not!

*sigh* i miss high tea with my grandmother. she'd always complain about the quality of the local scones. i have to say, they weren't the best i'd had in her defense..

I know what you mean about hot kitchens. Is the only time of year I wish I had blinds in the kitchen as it's like a greenhouse in there when the sun shines through the windows at...er...tea-time lol.

Hello, Janey. We're more or less living on fruit and salads at the moment - it's too hot to cook. However, we did go to our favourite Spanish restaurant last night with friends, and we ate well then. Today, we had friends around for the England match, and I made chicken in lime and ginger, with noodles and fried rice. A nice meal, but not too heavy on the digestion. We often settle for a sandwich, rather than a cooked meal, and it's certainly paying off for me - I've lost over 2 stone in the last year, without even trying.

The climate is working for you then! I bet you can't wait for the Spain v Portugal game after England's dire performance. Granted, we were denied a perfectly legitimate goal but why did it affect the players so much? They had a full 45 minutes in the second half to equalise and they didn't. Absolutely shambolic performance all round. Me and Mum have come up with a radical idea....just choose Englishmen from all the leagues APART FROM the Premier League. I am sure there were loads of Englishmen in those leagues who must've thought "I could do better than that" and they could too! Too many egos in the England team I'm afraid...all competing against one another, that is why we don't have a team. Germany played as a team and that is why they won. Unfortunately!

As Far as I am concerned, I think my eating habits usually change along with the seasons. For me, in the winter, I will usually eat a lot of food. Then in the summer, my eating will reduce a lot, eating so little, I will feel that I am full already. So many my friends just have the same experience as me. I think it is OK for me!

I suppose it is more natural for us to eat more in the colder months...stocking up on fat levels to keep us warm lol.

Mostly it doesn't change, but I do tend to use the oven less when it's hot. And I eat more ice cream...

I always feel like I am eating more during the fall and winter. Maybe it's those great Thanksgiving and Christmas dishes that we love so well that do that. I think I eat lighter and healthier in the summer months. We have to look our best at the beach you know.

Haha! Which beach is this then, do tell! We are about 10 miles away from the beach but the sands are more like "flats" with lots of pebbles on them. Blackpool, further down the coast, where I am from, has large expanses of beach and I reckon a lot of people will be on there today because it's so hot...for a change! I call it "comfort food" when we eat larger, hotter meals in the winter. I suppose it is more natural to cook on a regular basis at that time of year when all we want to do is keep warm and snug. I wish we could hibernate though, then we wouldn't have to do it!

We can also buy anything all year round. My eating habits dont change. I have a/c and if I need to use the oven, I turn on the a/c. My only problem is with making bread. It wont rise if theres a draft, so I cant use the a/c then but since I have 2 more kitchens downstairs, I use those in the summer. As for rain, well something is going on here and Im not sure what. We did have rain and quite a lot but our lakes and rivers are very low. We're still allowed to water our grass and plants on certain days, same for washing your car. We dont water our grass and I dont have any flowers or a garden. When its time to wash the SUV, hubby will do it in the garage so nobody has to know. Oh you should take a pic of your bright pink watering can and show us

I am having problems replying to discussions...typical weekend of everyone contributing all at the same time I would think. Not to worry, the pink watering can is there in My Pictures so you will see it...eventually. If it doesn't appear on this site please request the pic via email. It will make you smile if nothing else!

Our way here in the Philippines of preparing our meal is way different from yours. If we don't cook, we can't eat, even if there are fast food chains, restaurants, dinners, etc. Still we prefer our foods?meal to be home cooked, it's much more yummy, cooked with love. Yes, my eating habits changes as the seasons changes, like for example during rainy days, i prefer to eat spicy hot noodles. On summer time, i eat pizzas, ice cream, something that can make me cool down during hot seasons. I just eat food that soothes to me everyday needs depends on the weather/seasons it was.

Hi gracielle! I can imagine the whole family getting involved in cooking where you are...and good for you, I like that idea! You all look so healthy too. I don't suppose obesity is a problem in your country like it is elsewhere? You have made me feel hungry now by the way...especially mentioning ice cream lol.
