i just had an idea

What if.. we exhaust all our sources of oil now so we can focus our technology on new energy sources. would that be bad or is it? what do you think?

That's bound to happen in less than a century.. energy companies like Chevron are finding ways to discover sources of renewable energy.. like geothermal power, wind energy and solar power. This will be the trend of the future.. there are already transports in our country that uses electricity like the LRT and the E-jeepneys.

but the electricity used by those vehicles are collected from power plants which use fossil fuel

i agree! in the philippines, for one, power or electricity generation is not solely based on hydroelectric and geothermal energy because it cannot supply the current demand. the power generation companies still use fossil fuel.
although eradicating oil use is a possibility, it would be a far possibility. i don't think our oil wells are drying out soon and energy generation using oil is cheaper than geothermal, hydroelectric, solar and other sources.

that would be bad in my opinion, if you plan to develop new technology for new source of energy, might as well do it while we have something to substitute it. Coz along the way, there would be a lot of problem or challemges in developing and testing the new source and while th new source of energy is in that state, it would be best if, you'd have a back up support. Coz what if, it would be so long before you can make that work, then we'll have to go back to old ages, where we have to walk, and no electricity

we can get electricity from the sun, wind, geothermal sources, water, and nuclear. we already have alternative fuels they are just expensive to produce as of now.

i think it would be bad as oil is involved in the making of so many products. its just not used as a fuel source. natural gas is a good alternative to oil for energy needs. its more abundant where i live so it makes it cheaper and we wouldn't have to rely on foreign sources so much. plus it doesn't release as much CO2 emissions as oil as its much cleaner source. really i would just like to see oil strictly reserved to manufacturing products only. i mean theirs already other fuel sources out their like electric, solar, hydrogen, biofuels, and like i said previously natural gas. i would hope the process of alternative energy would speed up greatly because of the BP oil spill which is just terrible. that way the situation doesn't get desperate in the future so soon. the bp oil spill going to at least speed up the transition to alternative energy somewhat more. alternative energy had already achieved momentum even before the bp oil spill.

natural gas is accompanied by fossil fuel underground, when you strike natural gas underground usually there is oil underneath it( i learned this from geology class). natural gas can be also produced by using manure(usually livestock). good idea

There's already technology in new energy sources. It's just the cost of implementing it, and who is going to implement it. There's big industry in oil so until it runs out, you might find them interested in shutting down 'alternatives'.
What you're saying is like saying, let's cut down all the trees to make toilet paper, and then make toilet paper out of banana fibre. 1. They already make some toilet paper from banana paper, you just might not know about it. 2. No point using up a entire resource before you develop and change to another. There's no need to consume all the oil before changing.

its not like that. papers can be recycled. trees can be planted and be grown in farms. bananas grow fast. im just saying that they can easily be replaced but fossil fuels takes thousands of years to form (i learned that from geology). Now, if we ran out of this resource we can then focus on the renewable ones.
Now, about implementing the new energy sources. Oil companies, just like other businesses they will lose money if they don't sell. when that time comes they will be forced to create new power sources to sell to consumers. just like computers you need to upgrade to keep up with the latest

I think it would definitely get the research/industry for new "green" energy sources up and going at a much faster pace than it is going at right now. Unfortunately there isn't enough stuff out there that uses alternative energy that is affordable.. such as cars.. as far as i know all the affordable cars run on gasoline even if they are a decent/good hybrid. So it would be positive if that happened but there would probably be some "down time" where nothing much is going on which would be really bad since most people can't get to work without gasoline and stuff like that. At least this is what I think but I may be wrong so who knows?

I agree with that downtime but by that time, the government probably will pass a law making the new fuel cheaper. I think oil companies will come up with something very similar to Fossil fuel since most people cannot afford hybrid cars. That's what I think.

If that happened, than everyone will suffer as the current new energy sources will not be able to support all activities. So, we will faced no electricity, short supply of water, no air con. not enough food.
Can't imagine what will happened if your idea became reality.

That's a good idea, but that would be very hard to implement. Majority of our machines today are dependent on oil, we have to create first, or accelerating the manufacture of new machines that do not use oil but instead more environmental-friendly fuels.

We already are implementing this idea because everyday we use up large amounts of oil and the more people that are born means more people to be transported from one place to another. Every year we are using more and more fuel.

It is hard to say good or bad if the oil exhausted by us.Until now,it seems that no new energy sources found better than oil.Such as nuclear energy which result many disasters on the earth. It is not as good as oil.We hope to find new energy sources, and hope to find the better one.

how about electric turbines that creates electricity by utilizing the energy exerted by people who workout at the cardio machine at the gym. this is for electric vehicles
