Why is it my Mylot disscutions are split between my spam and regular mail folder

I think it is because you do not use Gmail, and since you don't use Gmail, your email provider filters messages for you. It will scan for words like free, or make money, and several other, and decide for you that those are spam, and put them there, Gmail does too, just to a far lesser extent then the rest of the providers.
