Do you grown your own veges?

I love doing this...however because I usually rent the houses I live in, I don't grow as much veges as I would like to. At the house where I live at the moment, I am growing tomatoes, corn, capsicum, cabbage, broccoli, beans & basil. I have also planted potatoes & some pumpkin seed so hopefully they will grow too. What sort of veges do you grow?

I have a big veggie garden but it is a bit neglected at the moment. When we decided to sell, I was just about to start the winter planting, but I have been concentrating on finishing all of odd jobs around the place first. I still want to get something growing in there as the yard will look more appealing with some healthy vegetables growing. At the moment I just have some Ceylon Spinach growing on a trellis at the end of the garden and the rest of it has been taken over by a pumpkin plant which grew out of the compost. We are still using the pumpkin plant for it's leaves otherwise I would have pulled it all out already. I want to grow some spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, zucchinis, squash, broccoli, and loads of others. Too many to mention actually!

I can understand why you don't want to put in too much effort but at the same time, your house can be listed as a self-sufficient as such...you have a long list of veges you want to grow like I do!!

I woulod love to get a compost bin or worm farm but I just think it would too much of a hassel to move it so I won't get one until I buy my own house.

Yeah, you are right. It would be appealing to the right person. We have a full rainwater tank to water it and a large compost bin to feed the garden as well.

I grow quite a few of my own. We try different ways. My potatoes are in 5 gallon pails, Two tomatoes and 1st time to try parsnips in a pail. I have 4 large combine tires with tomatoes, zucchini, strawberries and cucumbers (they are about 3 foot tall) to make weeding easier. Out in the garden are tomatoes, sweet corn, cabbage, muskmelon and pumpkins (i hope). I also like perennials so we have strawberries, rhubarb, horseradish and asparagus.

WOW!! You do have a fair bit! I love growing veges - I find they taste nicer home grown plus it saves you money on the grocery bill.

Especially when the summer squash is going good. Then tomato sandwiches. You bet it helps. I even make a jam out of rhubarb (tastes like strawberry jam).

Wow You are growing lots of different vegetables! Well done. I love growing vegetables - they are a lot fresher and tastier than shop bought. At the moment I am growing tomatoes, cucumber, pumkin, hot chillies, basil, carrots, lettuce, snow peas and garlic. We also have chickens, so we get fresh eggs - nothing nicer! I think growing your own vegetables is so rewarding and beneficial; I get a great sense of achievement watching them all grow and especially when I harvest them. Good luck with your potatoes and pumpkins (watch the pumkins - they take over!)

What a great idea to grow your pumpkins in the trailer - that should stop them from taking over the garden!

Hopefully it will contain the pumpkins!

I agree - they do taste better than store bought...I love farm fresh eggs - especially the double yolkers! I can't have chooks coz my dogs would eat them :( I will watch the pumpkins...I have an old rusted trailer in my back yard from a previous tennent of owner that my landlords have told me to leave there so I have put the pumpkin seeds there in hope that the trailer frame will contain it a little.

I´m in Winter right now, but I´m already planning my vegetable garden. This year I´ll make raised beds to have more produce. I am thinking of tomatoes, leeks, arugule, a couple of zuchinni plants, green beans, bunch onions and some potatoes in containers. My vegetable patch is not big enough for corn so I won´t even try. And I buy basil as it is very unexpensive and I have never been able to grow it as beautiful as the one I can get at the farmer´s market. Luck and take care!
