I have noticed that in lots of discussions where tortoise/turtle are mentioned that most US people call both turtles and tortoise 'turtles'. Here in the UK turtles are only the creature that lives in water land 'turtles' are called tortoise. Tortoises are quite a popular pet in the UK but still quite a rare pet as they are very expensive to buy now due to strict controls that were brought in to stop the cruel transportation that was common in the 60's and 70s At that time you could buy a tortoise for 50p now they are £250 and you have to have a certificate to keep them. Here is a picture of my two tortoise Sammy and Speedy !!

i call them ninja turtles hehe... i'm fortunate enough to have been a very curious boy who likes to read a lot when growing up, so i do know the difference between turtles and tortoises your two little tortoises look kind of cute there..and i like the name 'speedy'. hehe.. and wow...i didn't know that tortoises cost so much in UK now for that kind of money you could maybe buy a tank full of tortoises here...

Hi Oldchem, I am saving hard to get a pair of tortoises myself right now. I had amassive one calledLucy when I was a child but like yours was stolen, we believe that it was the chinese people over the road but could never proof, I was heartbroken. I would rather a larger one as don't wish to keep in vivarium as they seem to do these days, my Lucy just used to wander round the garden bless and would quite often end up in the the rabbits at the side of the house too as we havea massive section then which was one large hutch and lots of rabbits, wonder why I have so many now lol. We did used to be able to get them but now with the certification process it is so expensive. If you ever breed these two remember I want one - ofcourse will pay. I have noticed too that the Americans call them turtles. Huggles. Ellie :)

We don't keep ours in a vivarium, they have their own enclosed garden with a 'rock house' they can go in when they want. We do have a vivarium for them in the winter, but they don't hibernate. I wonder if Sammy may be a little young as there is no sign ao the patter of tinny feet, or laying of eggs!! She doesn't actually seem to like Speedy at all, she prefers the hamster!! Strange animal we have

Oh, chem! how funny! It reminds me of when I was married...we had a male peke-a-poo and a female cat and they were inseparable. He was always mauling her so when she got pregnant, we said she was expecting dats and cogs. lol Now, what would we call a tortoise crossed with a hamster? A tortster???

When I was small, I thought that turtles have tender shells, whilst tortoises have harder outer surfaces and tend to be bigger.. Well, nowadays, I am more comfortable to call everything tortoises.. "You jump, I bounce"...

Thanks, Alice.. those are really good information. Let me take some abstracts from it which manage to make me understand a great deal. "Turtles have flatter backs and tortoises live entirely above water" - thanks again..

Honestly I don't know anything about either except they both have a shell and legs. There are many what we call box "turtles" come through our yard. I'll be sure and call them tortoise from now on. Maybe they won't look so mean then.

People who call a tortoise a turtle are ignorant of the difference which you stated quite accurately. A turtle is amphibious while a tortoise lives its life on dry land.

I got a little confused with several posts about 'turtles' when they were obviously tortoises - but then it doesn't take much to confuse me

P.S. I am an American. So you see there are Americans who don't confuse them, although I think the general idea as to why some do call them all turtles is because of the general similarity between the two. The difference is subtle and isn't always apparent right away.

Yeah, I have the same problem with ravens and crows. It amazes me how many people don't have a clue about the difference.

Hi, oldchem1. I have always called these type of animals turtles. I am familiar with the other name of it. I just don't use this term as often. Where did you find these turtles? I remember my uncle coming back home with a large turtle. I don't know where he got it from. He was always bringing back things when he would go and leave off.

I bought mine from registered dealers, they are very hard to get hold of and you also need a certificate.

It's just intellectual laziness on the part of us in the USA. Some of us are not going to take the time to learn the difference. Others don't care that there's a difference. It's the same thing with rabbits and hares. We may know there's a difference, but for us they're all rabbits.

Whatever you like to call it , it also still the family of turtles. The important is that you love and like to take care that animal. I also like to have it but it happen it did not come up to me in my life. Its rare also here in my place to have that. It is good to take care of this pet rather than the other but as what you have mentioned that it needs to have certificate as it is endangered species in your country as it is also in my place.

They look lovely!!! My friend has one... named George lol... he is very slow, and he hides a lot in his shell, but always comes out for his food. I know she told me that he snaps a couple of times, so I don't really like the idea of handling him, but oddly I did handle her corn snake lol They are pretty expensive, I never knew they cost that much!!!

Me and my first tortoise - 50 years ago me and my gran with my tortoise
Yes they are very expensive, I bought my son one with a vivarium ( special house for living in doors) for his birthday 6 years ago - cost me almost £400 then when we moved he was out in the garden and got pinched!!! When I was a kid EVERYONEhad one, and they were 1o shillings (50p) here is a picture from 50 years ago of me with my gran ( who was 90 then bless!!) and me holding Sammy, my tortoise

Great pic! Bet you were really angry when it got pinched, some people annoy me!!! And talk about inflation!!!!!

We know who did it but can't prove it, you should have heard my daughter she was about 18 at the time and was livid. We'd just moved and we live on a type of park - it is in a very small village and there is no crime at all here, but there had been BT men around that day in and out of gardens so we know it was them, stupid thing is they won't be able to sell him because he was a Slovinian tortoise we had to have a certificate for him!!

They are so cute,I want a tortoise now!! We have hamsters, guinea pigs, a corn snake, fancy mice and gerbils!!

I had a pet tortoise in the 1970s called Shaney. I don't think it lived very long though. I can't remember much about it, as I was young. They were quite common to have as pets at the time, but they are very rare now.

The tortoise's garden - This is where they live, it is there summer home!!
This is their garden, that big white 'stone' with a solar panel on the top is actually a house where they can shelter.

I have 2 tortoises, big tortoises, as big as my face. They've been my pet since i was a kid, now i don't really look after them, since they're big now. I agree. Turtles live in the sea and don't have fingers. I don't know if tortoise that expensive in UK.

I heard from a trainer that when a turtle is growing up their shell at their back are really breaking and a new shell replacing the old ones, and its so painful and nasty that they don't go out of their houses until its done but still they come out after with a very great improvement of themselves. I think your pet talks a lot about life just simply showing the changes in their lives. God bless you and more power.
