Education plays an important role in imparting knowledge and gaining experience. But is it really necessary to go to college or university to be successful in life? People attend college or university for many reasons for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge etc.

Hi friend,
According to me, most people attend collage / university to develop themselves to face challenges of life, and to prepare themselves for earning their living.

Well getting an education necessarily doesnt guarantee a job, does it? Even uneducated farmers earn a living. Is college or a degree worth it? is the big question.

Well said. A degree might get you a good job and a good job in turn gives stability and respectful social life. Now that was a smart point that you gave out there, that not everyone has a land to cultivate! Wow, you checkmated me with that point. So I guess, education is somewhat necessary for a good social life.

I agree with what you said. But having collage degree, professional degree surely increases chances of getting good jobs and respectable position in society. And Every person who is not attending collage may not have land to raise crop there.

One idea is to develop their interests or to prepare for work... some companies prefer specialized or highly skilled people to get the job. Also, in developing their interests, they do better in those aspects and possibly they can use that to help them in the future...

So basically only people who want a job should attend college or university, is that what you are trying to say? Well I do agree with you to a certain extent.

not really... some go to college to fulfill their passion and enhance their skills or love for it. And in anyway, in the world we live in, we need money to survive and what better way of earning yet enjoying the work is to do what you love...

I think knowledge is the only asset you have that no one can steal from you. It is yours to keep till the end of time and with the scrolls of degrees earned from attending colleges and univisities will armed a person with better job prospect anywhere in the world without fear. It is vital for the younger generation to earned themselves a university degree to be in this competitive world otherwise they will be left redundant in the mainstream of development. In this rat race world, education is important to survive the challenges.

i remember what my parents advice that education is the only for success in some point its true without a diploma in college its its hard to find a job and those who the bachelor degree and masteral degree has these advantages in finding a great job.but it also include luck and perseverance to reach our goal in life it needs alot of hardwork and dedication in the work.

I am currently pursuing my masters in computer application. I scored 86% in high school but wasn't active on the co-curricular front. In secondary school i got 70% and was the President of the students council. In my bachelors degree I averaged 76% and was awarded the best student of the batch. Now I have never been the top ranker in my class or batch, neither am I a bookworm, I just love exploring things. So do you still agree that degree or grades and marks are the only criteria to judge knowledge, talent and hard work?

Specialized education really shows dedication and knowledge. I agree with you. If someone dedicates their life towards gaining and imparting the gained knowledge effectively then that person truly is inspiring.

hi zeethegr8! I grew up from a middle class family. My parents used to tell me that education is the only thing that they can give me for inheritance. It is the only thing that nobody can take away. I believe they are right. It is a way for us to prepare for our future. Not just because we want to be employees all our lives, but it is the only security that we will have. For instance, even if you are able to establish a business, you may still lose everything in an instant due to different reasons such as economic down turn, fire accident, etc. If you have at least a degree in college, you are still able to have an option to be find a good job when you most need it.

College degrees are very useful in the workplace. So many of the great jobs only accept applicants with degrees.

With how society works and employment goes, attending an institution wherein you can get recognized with certain advantages to make themselves candidates worth considering in particular professions is really a necessity.
That's basically why people attend such institutions of higher learning, to be better off in their future. Comparing that to those who didn't attend college or university, they just have little opportunity in any career that they would like to have. Then again, there are those exceptional few who are able to claim their success even without the help of such institutions that would grant them certificates. Perhaps they can go on with their careers by their talent or special skills.
But, for those who don't recognize their own skill or just don't want to venture with such capabilities, they all just have to aspire on the usual route, through education and after that, be impressive when they want to be employed.

If somebody is going to limit himself to jobs in any company, then he needs a degree, which is the basic qualification. But for self motivated persons who are ready for a business, the knowledge from the college is not enough. He has to rely more on his experience. Anyhow, a college can provide the basics for him too.

Well its true that knowledge and education plays an important role in our life. Also its not mandatory that we can gain knowledge from colleges or universities only. We can gain knowledge from anything around us. But still, colleges and universities are the places for gaining them in bulk as well as we are tested by examinations and rewarded too by the degrees which are the proof of our knowledge. So why not one shall go to college, If he really wants to gain knowledge.
And apart from knowledge and education, college is really fun.

College sure is fun, its a wholesome experience. Knowledge isn't something that can be contained and imparted. Anyone from anywhere can gain knowledge about anything these days. The only impartiality lies in certification. What if you have more knowledge than me but I have a higher degree and certifications to my name? Is it still fair for you to get a fairly low cadre job?

I don't think it is a must to study at a college or university in order to be successful, but I think it helps in many cases, since you learn a lot of really valuable things there. I know I learned a lot when I was studying anyway, and I do think that this will show sometime in my future.
Also, you meet a lot of great people who become your friends for life when you go to college or university. That's not a bad reason either!

For easily and collectively learning subjective knowledge, college is the best place. We get to interact with lots of people and discuss key issues. Well, that sure aint a bad reason.

People go to colleges and university to get a college degree.. it is believed that by getting one increases ones chance of succeeding in job hunting.. but i really disagree in this premise.. a college diploma never assure your success in the future.. It is my belief that in real life it's the Emotional Quotient (EQ) being street smart that really counts a lot and not the Intelligence Quotient (IQ), unfortunately you don't learn EQ in colleges and Universities, you learn them in real life, learn them in failures, and the University of Hard Knocks (real life challenges). You can take my word on this

Very well said. I also believe in developing one's EQ, that's what corporates and industrialists have been focusing on these days apart from the IQ. Unfortunately for the system, it still lacks the credibility to choose the right candidates. Top rankers get more preference still.

Having a diploma or degree helps us in many ways specially in finding a job and also you will have an edge because we are living in a competitive world and having a degree will help you boost up your chances in landing a good job or any job. Just like what my parents said "education is the only thing that they can give us, and the only thing that we can inherit".

Well surely if I'm competing with the uneducated, I have better chances of getting the job. But that's the point, why does degree have to be the basis of a good job?! Why not knowledge? And knowledge necessarily can't be gained by doing a degree or diploma!

I think it's definitely to open more "doors", or opportunities. A lot of places won't even bother having an interview with you without a bachelor's degree. You may go to college for a specific job in mind, but you may not end up doing that for the rest of your life, but your skills picked up in college will give you such a wide variety of options to choose from. Times are hard, and having a bachelor's/masters/whatever gives you a definite advantage over others applying for a job. I think I've also heard that college graduates make on average around...$10,000+ more per year than people without college degrees. I don't know about you, but I like those odds haha.

Yes you are right, degree holders have been found to earn more than non-degree holders. But one thing should also not be ignored that even though it opens doors, I see many unemployed degree holders. So ultimately the degree didnt help them get a job, they are just not good enough for any job. So education for them was meaningless, thats what they start to think and consequently give up hope.
Bill Gates didnt have a degree until 1 or 2 years ago! But he has a multi-million dollar global company!

Nowadays the competition is very serious, it is not easy to find a good job. Therefore, you have to be much more special and better than others, then you will be employed. And first of all, the certificate plays a main role in the job recruitment, especially for young people who don't have more working experience.

i think there are several reasons behind it. First, title of education give great impact for your career. Companies tend to choose those with high education. second, the paradigm. Believe or not, those who really graduate from college with their own skill tend to have wide thoughts (not narrow minded) and mature in thinking and making decision. Besides that, you can also differentiate those who graduate from college and those are not from the way the talking. Those who really graduate tend to be more polite like profesionals

Exactly, serious candidates are outspoken, smart, intelligent and knowledgeable, all at the same time. For such candidates, education means just more than a job - it means a world of knowledge. But there are many who cannot afford education but are much more capable than the ones having it. For such people, don't you think the current corporates are being a little too harsh by rejecting them just because they don't have an educational background which fits the job requisites?

Some people go to college just for self establsihment and higher salary after graduation. It seems to be of substances. However, society is full of fierce competions. nowdays We have to horn our skills and employ our knowlege to make a living and even live a comfortable life. Therefore, we have to work hard and use every opportunity to practise. The other side of the coin is the opposite trend. Some guys play in the college just for the diploma and the certificate. In their minds , the graduation certifcate brings them the golden key which could naturelly elevate them and offer them wealth in the future. What a pity thought when they find themselevs wrong .Without the actual capability and the self value ,they can not get established everywhere.
Second, this maybe the last chance for people to study in such an academic environment where professors teach them plenty of knowledge in many aspects; this also helps them to gain an abundant knowledge for future life.
In sum, there are various reasons for people to go to college or university, but the main purposes are to prepare for future job and gain new experiences for their life. For the above reasons, going to a college or university is the suitable place in the hope of improving themselves or achieving their goals.Colleges or universities are having infrastructure such as buildings, liabraries, rooms to get the lecture, teachers, professors and you can say what ever facilities are required to students are available. But those students are not in such position they can study at their own and some other can attend classes at study centres or through private tutors etc.

When we talk about money and your purpose is just to have money, if you are rich you do not need to attend college it will be useless. Just put up a business and start making yourself rich. But if your purpose to gain respect, responsibility, good friends and especially knowledge attend college. Knowledge is the best key to successful personality.
