Hi mylotters, I wonder weather it will be in interest of organisation if boss develops friendly relations with his subordinates. I feel if friendly relationship takes place between boos and subordinate, it may help boss in getting information, that other wise may get hide. This may help both boss and organisation. How ever there is a risk involved where subordinate may not obey orders of boss if friendly relationship between them exists. What is your take on issue? Will be develop friendly relationship with your subordinates? Will your gender and subordinate's gender will make difference?

Hi common_man, yeah i strongly recommend that friendly with our subordinates and team work. You can do wonders if you develop this friendly relationship, giving guidance, training, support individually (though its a team work), encourage, motivate your team members. Sure you will achieve if you have targets or you can close perfectly the given task. Then you will get an appreciation from your higher officials.

I would surely recommend being friendly with the surbordinates but not everyone takes the friendship as professional especially when it is between different genders. I during my working days did always keep friendly relationship with my juniors but also maintained the professional relationship and have never had the problem. I was LUCKY.

There is definitely a lot of positive argument for having a friendly relationship with subordinates. I think that as long as the boss knows how to conduct himself appropriately whether in or out of the office, there is no risk of losing his subordinates' respect. That happens most especially when there is no amiable relationship between boss and employee.

Yes! I think it really doesnt matter if someone is the superior or not. As long as the subordinates also know their limitations then I think its okay for superiors and subordinates to be friends.

i think boss should be friendly with his subordinates. if boss have a good relation with subordinates,he can know how subordinate's thinking and then would treat his subordinates better, make his subordinates more love their boos and become harder work. if boss have a good relation with subordination,he would know more imformation about company.

Well, if someday I become a supervisor and have subordinate, I will make sure they perceive me as a friendly boss and will treat them like a friend, but only to certain extent. I still have to draw a line between being friends and boss. If I am too friendly they might be unefficient doing their job cause they know I will not punish them for it, but at the same time give them understanding what this job objective and how it can be achieved.

"Thus far and no further" could be the best way common_man! I always maintained friendly relations with my subordinates but I also knew where to draw the line. It is this crucial level that takes care of any subordinate exploiting a friendly boss. I no longer work but even with my domestic help I am friendly and when this is done moderately I have noticed one gets the best deal.

While you are climbing up the ladder of your career, your subordinates are holding the ladder for you. If they withdraw their support, you will have a fall worse than Humpty Dumpty had. I strongly recommend one should be friendly with his subordinates. Considering the risk involved if the subordinates take advantage of your friendliness and disobeys you then be soft as butter while you are friendly but be tough as steel if he disobeys. Gender should not make a difference in boss subordinate relationship.

I feel that all bosses should be friendly.. though they have to keep a certain distance to avoid over familiarity with their subordinates... You got to rule out of respect and love, never rule or manage with fear.. this will not help in the long run..

Hi I agree we should not use fear as motivation for making people work the way we want. it will make more harm in long term. Thanks for response.
