Are not all babies and small children cute?

The other day when we were grocery shopping, my friends saw this family who had a bit of problem with their produce spilling and my friend remarked that there was this cute little girl, etc. So I ask "was she black?" because it seems to be that all black children are adorable and cute, at least in my friends's eyes. ( I did not tell her why I was upset. She figured it was because I did not get enough sleep the night before). It is the same with my husband, cute equals dark skin especially of the South of Sahara variety. Do they need that confirmation that African American babies are cuter then anyone else's?
So the little black girl dancing on American Home Video is very very cute, but if a baby of a different ethnic group was dancing, it is not cute.
So where is it the idea, that cuteness depends on the darkness of skin? Is not a little red haired girl who wants to 'help' her mother cute?
There are lots of children who want to help out and in their fumbling way make it seem funny. So why is cuteness limited? Are not all babies and small children cute when they do their antics?
Now I live in a city where there are lots of ethnic varieties and especially in our neighborhood because the store has food from China, India, South America, the Phillipines, as well as from the States, Italy, and other countries, so it is not as if the little black girl was a rare site.
But why are only they cute? Is my little granddaughter not cute because she has brown hair and blue eyes? Is not my friend's daughter not cute because she is part Austrian? What is wrong with people?

I have seen cute tots.
I have also seen tots who aren't so cute.
I don't think any baby is cute, but that's just me.
Well, my niece was a cute baby, but that's because she looked like a CHILD instead of a lumpy little Winston Churchill....
I don't care what color the tot is, they are either cute or not cute.
"E" wasn't a cute baby, nor a cute tot or even a cute child. He looks like his father and I suspect that he will finally look good in his 30's... He's 24 now.
I've know a couple of other children who weren't cute until they were more or less grown, they were kind of... dorky looking.
I have to feel sorry for them, I hope they have better childhoods than I did...

But do you base your cuteness on race? That is what bothers me. I mean I was very sensitive and I used to hate it when people said people ere better because they were poor, of a darker complexion, lived in the tropics, lived on a farm, or whatever stereotypes they were using. It is not about that particular individual child, it is if there was a little German boy would she have said he was so cute?

Okay, you gotta read my post above about the not-cute ones! Oh, & don't forget your niece! Is she still so pretty?
I love it..."lumpy little Winston Churchills!" Elic, you're a scream!!

I would feel the same way. I feel that if most people said that only babies who were of a certain complexion were cute, that it would give those who were not in that group such an inferiority complex that they would feel unworthy of any favor given to them. I know that this is sort of a double negative, but I ask you, when you were not in the cute group, did you not feel rather bad about yourself?
I just do not want that to happen because the result of this is either the people stay depressed or else they start to think that they deserve all the privileges of the others and that is not right either.

That IS rude! Just tell them "human colored," & leave them to think about it. If they're too stupid to realize they've basically been told it doesn't matter what complexion a child has, then do you really want to stay around them, anyway?

This is the first time I have every heard of anyone who judges a child's cuteness by the color of their skin?? IMO all small children and baby animals are cute. Thank heavens I do not have any friends like yours!

She does have some funny ideas. i think it is because she has not lived in North America long and has not had much contact with the variety we have over here. I think all babies are cute and I am certainly not going to single out a child of a particular ethnic group as cuter for that reason.
It is the same with my husband who told me not to look at someone at the Mall because that someone was disabled, but at that time, I was looking at something in the shop behind that person. I mean there are so many disabled people in our neighborhood, so many in wheelchairs, etc.it is one of the few places where wheelchairs can get into.
I sure hate the idea of making people uncomfortable by saying who is cute and who is not.

Maybe I don't get out much but I have never heard this prejudice in cuteness in my life! I actually have no idea what you are talking about! Sorry, I have no input here since I am at a loss to think of anyone I know who thinks the way your friends do. "Cute" is purely subjective and what is cute to me, may not be cute to you. This discussion has actually surprised me!

It is not about the definition of cuteness. It is about that two little ones can be doing the same thing like 'helping' clean up a mess, but one is cute because it is a little black child who is cleaning up the mess, while the other is not cute because he happens to be a little white child. Therefore the cuteness is not based on whether the toddler smiles but based on the color of his skin. That is what I do not like.

Even still, I have never heard of this before. There is no preference that I can see for children who are darker. I have NEVER noticed anyone saying ANYTHING like that before. Maybe it is only something that happens with your family and friends. It's certainly not something that occurs here.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference.
I tend to think asian and african american babies are adorable, but overall it's what babies do, no matter what ethnicity, that makes them cute. I think it's cutest when babies and little kids get that curious look on their faces and try to figure things out. ^o^

It is not right to think that Asian and African American babies are adorable and cute, because it means that those who are not, like white babies are not cute. And if you think they are cute then, then you will be more willing to overlook any faults they have when older. And that is already happening. Look America has a president who can get away with things that the previous presidents could not, even those who are of the same party as he is. And who knows whether this is the result of him hearing 'we all are cute as babies because the white people say so?"
And all babies are cute when they try in their own simple way to do adult things or say statements based on what they see in their limited ways.

All babies are cute when they're trying something for the first time. If you want a perfect example, try feeding a baby ice cream, & watch his surprise, shock, the enjoyment yet the shivering at it's freezing temperature--the faces he'll make! I defy anyone to keep a straight face watching that!

I was a bit upset because it sort of made me feel that I am sure that much of the conceit people have bout themselves is started by well meaning people saying they were cute when they were young.
And then they start to want more approval of their cuteness and if they do not get it - .

suspenseful hi I think almost all little girls or boys are cute when they are trying to hard to mimic adults ways. I do not think the color of the skin should have anything to do with it. but sometimes people get hung up on trying to show they are not racist that they get in their own way. Like singling out only little black American girls to be cute when they would have to admit a little Caucasian girl with red hair is also cute or a Swedish child with dimples and golden hair. Why must we be so hung up on skin colors any way? We are all human beings and we produce some really cute little children trying so hard to help Mommy.

That is what bothers me when someone thinks that the little black baby boy or girl is cute because they need more verification about their cuteness and then what happens, we drive along and there are two dark skinned girls crossing where they are not supposed to and my friend lets them go by when if they were not, she might have told them to get back on the sidewalk.
It leads to more problems.

Hi, suspenseful. This is not true at all! Any color of skin can be very beautiful. It does not matter at all. I have seen many babies of many different colors that are very cute. They can be Asian, Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Jewish, Hispanic, African American, Filipino.. You name it. I have seen all colors. I always heard that people think that people that are of a darker shade of complexion is ugly. But that is not true either. They have said that people with lighter complexions are more attractive. But that is not true either! Any skin color or culture can be beautiful! Including your, granddaughter and friend's daughter too. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise either!

It did upset me because I do not think that one has to be told they are cute because they are darker or lighter then me. It is when someone says that a little boy or girl is cute and you know that it is a child who is dark because you never heard them say it about a child of their own ethnic group. I also suppose that if someone was dark skinned and they never said any of their babies or that of their group were cute, but when there was a little Norwegian boy playing around, they would say he is cute.

SUSPENSEFUL: I think you need to associate with a better crowd! Your friends sound as if they have either racist views, or they're suffering from what's called "liberal guilt," which is an over-attempt to appear fair-minded, to the detriment of one's own race &/or culture. I suspect there is hidden racism behind that, & their ideology conflicts with their hidden shameful real feelings, so they feel guilty about it, so they over compensate. Weird, but it's logical, if you've ever seen it at work...as I have...
I think such a mindset is silly. Most babies are cute--though I have met a rare few who are bone-deep ugly (though of course, being polite, I would never say so! LOL!). But the ugliness in those rare few has nothing to do with the race of the child, more just the way they look and act in general. And as for acting badly, that's the fault of the parents not using proper discipline, a widespread problem in any race these days.

Hello, sometimes the culture that these persons are not fit enough to give a constructive criticism and see what we are all equal in spite of the traits that identify us, I personally I ignore that kind of people.

All the babies and small children are given physical beauty individually. All of them are cute. So, there is no point that this babies will be considered ugly.

I just can't agree. Viewing them with a non-sentimental eye, one can see a myriad of facial & body types. Some will be called pretty, but there are those no honest person could call good-looking. This not said on the basis of race, but strictly on the standards of normal beauty, such as whether a baby has a sharply pointed head with scrabbly hair, square head & too-small, squinty eyes, or maybe it's woggly-eyed, or has huge ears--these are the same standards we all use to judge beauty in adults, & whether one likes to admit it or not, people do assess babies the same way, staying politely silent if they find a given baby unattractive. Anyway, humans can change their looks dramatically simply by aging, so just because a baby got hit with the ugly stick doesn't mean it will stay that way.
As it happens, I was a gloriously pretty baby, but these days, I frighten dogs & horses in the streets, so it can go both ways!
Just keepin' it real, here...

Hi Suspenseful,
I'm with you. It matters not their skin color or ethnic background. I think they are all cute. Some have personalities that stand out more than others making them cuter than cute but then that has absolutely nothing at all to do with the color of their skin. I actually haven't come across anyone who thinks that darker skinned babies are cuter than others. It's kind of weird, i think.

lol. No because there are some ugly little kids. Cuteness to me isn't about race but its when the child has those features about their face that makes you say "awwww" and want to hug the stuffing out of them like the big eyes and chubby little cheeks.

I think ALL babies are cute! In fact, I am watching a video of a new child actress who is not only cute but also smart. Babies are delightful, especially to their moms.
But then, I just don't know cute they are still going to be in my eyes if I start to clean up their pee and their poo.

Thanks for sharing.

Definitely...no matter what race or creed they are, little children are excessively cute. That's because they're yet to be tarnished by the worldly wants and greed.
