We go through loaves of bread like there's no tomorrow, is it worth making your own bread? Does it save tim or money? Is it actually easy to make bread from scratch?

One thing I love about making bread myself is the smell of it. There is nothing better than to have your home smelling of fresh baked bread, it is lovely. But... saying that I don't often make my own bread, it takes so long, and is very fiddly, I just take the lazy route and buy it. My Mum has the perfect answer which maybe I should do, which is she bought a bread maker, and it is brilliant.

i agree with rosie, it is time consuming, and my problem is once i take that first bite i usually eat the whole loaf in 2 days myself. and sometimes it doesnt rise as high as it should.

Why thank you Max! Actually I am the same, it just tasted so much better than shop bought bread, that it does not last long at all, you do pretty well actually making it last 2 days LOL!

I don't think it would last two hours in our house! We chomp through bread like mad over here :) We've never actually made any bread yet before, does it really take a long time - say, is two hours enough time?

I've heard about using bread makers too, are you supposed to have to use one, or can you still make bread otherwise? Is there a difference? (sorry, totally know nothing about bread making..) :(

I make my own bread. It wont save you time, its VERY time consuming but it tastes so much better. As for saving money, well I dont think so. I have to turn on my oven low to let it rise, then to cook the bread. Im doing it for the taste, not to save money. Unless you do huge batches, but then how will you be able to cook them all in the same oven? Remember it needs 2 hrs to rise, then you shape the bread and let it rise 1 hr again. You need to figure it all out so your oven is free when you need it to cook a batch. BUT, I do recommend you try it, only YOU can tell if its right for you or not.
