Barking is a natural behavior for a dog. Excesiv barking may be a problem.
Of course your dog doesn't understand what means "be quiet". You have to teach him first the meaning of these words.
If you work with him for a few days to learn this command, your problem will become history.
That's what you have to do:
When your dog is barking, take a biscuit, wave it in front of your dog and tell him "be quiet". He will become interested in the treat and stop barking for a second or two. Reward him for being quiet for these seconds.
If he starts barking again, you repeat the command with another biscuit. This time make him wait for 5 seconds before you reward him.
Increase the quiet time intervals from 3 seconds to 5, 7, 10seconds and so on. In your first training session you may reach 1 or 2 minutes of quiet time.
Repeat each day until he realy knows what "be quiet" means.
I wish you luck!
