Please Obama call their bluff

Obama has said next year he is going tackle the deficit...and he is going to "call their bluff" on all those screaming for fiscal responsibility. I hope he does it. I want to know who is really for getting this country out of debt and who is just paying lip service to get votes...including him.
"When I start presenting some very difficult choices to the country, I hope some of these folks who are hollering about deficits and debt step up, because I'm calling their bluff," the president said at a press conference during the G-20 summit in Toronto.
Too bad you have not gotten serious about it before now...it would have been nice to have seen some real cuts in waste and see the government's reckless spending reeled in from the start of your presidency. Now we have a trillion or so more to worry about. But I guess it is better late than never. But I do see that he is waiting until after the November elections to do it. Why wait? Lets see who is paying lip service to fiscal responsibility NOW before we vote again. After wouldn't it be better to expose them as liars now before the next election? I say call them on their bluff NOW.How about you? What "difficult" choices do you think Obama will offer the nation? How about cutting the pork? Or foreign aide? I say before you ask the american public to pay more in taxes or take cuts anywhere that the government actually start using the money we give them wisely...every penny. Of course it won't get rid of the deficits on their own....but it would be nice start and show the government was willing to do their part. Tell me what you think.

Oh I know...what Obama's idea will probly be is token cuts to things, a very tiny amount of reduction on waste and a BIG old increase in taxes.
I would love to see real fiscal responsibility steps taken...but I won't hold my breath...not from either side. The Republicans and Democrats we have in office now DO NOT even begin to understand the real meaning of term...so I hold out little hope of anything real getting done...except taking more money out my wallet.

I don't think it's so much that HE'S waiting until after the November election as there simply not being enough time to get much done before then. I also don't think "calling their bluff" is going to do much good since we all know the Republicans, especially those in the Senate, are going to rail against anything and everything President Obama even hints at! They were all for "Pay-Go" - even though they'd been the ones to let it disappear under Bush - even to the point of several of them proposing it...that is UNTIL Obama came out for it, then they suddenly voted against their own bill!
Everyone always says they're against "pork" spending, but for some strange reason it's only pork when it's being spent in someone ELSE'S backyard. I think there are many ways to cut spending without hurting too many people but I'm not sure how much impact it would have; a million here and a billion there might still be little more than a drop in the bucket but every little bit counts. There is so much waste and inefficiency, I'd guess that every federal agency could likely be streamlined to save money. For some reason the very idea of cutting the defense budget, especially when a Democrat dares suggest it, is enough to bring out the Hitler accusations but the fact is we're spending billions on outdated weapons and other equipment that haven't been used for decades.
I think it's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, to get the two parties to come to any agreement on what should or should not be cut because their priorities or so different and their philosophies are polar opposites of each other's. I tend to agree with the majority of economists who say the government needs to invest in the economy at times like these, that growth in itself will bring the deficit down somewhat and that we need a combination of spending cuts and increases in revenue - aka tax increases - to balance the budget and pay down our enormous debt. I find it interesting that at the exact same time that millions of those who are unemployed were denied an extension by the Republicans in the Senate the first million and billionaires' heirs were inheriting their fortunes totally tax free. That's lost tax revenue as well as lost income, small though it may be, for the unemployed, many of whom will now end up on welfare and/or as part of the statistics of those who have lost their homes to foreclosure. I think there's something terribly wrong with this picture!

The republican suppostively did not vote for the unemployement extention because it did go under pay as you go. The Democrats put it under emergency spending which means they did not have to show where the money to pay for it was coming from. The republicans did not want it under that...they want the democrats to show how they were going to pay for the extention. They want it on pay as you go.
I don't know why the democrats just didn't come up with and show how they were going to pay for it just so they could get the thing passed.
To tell you the honest truth...even if Obama makes an honest effort to make real and honestly needed cuts...congress (members on both sides) are not going to go along with him very well. Why? Because NONE of them know what fiscal responsibility is and none of them WANT to stop spending money. They won't want "their" pet projects cut or their budgets cut back.
THe wars are costing a fortune so I think we need to get them overwith NOW. That would save a ton. BUt I don't see that one happening. I am hearing that Afghanistan could last another 5 years....at what cost?
I honestly want to know who is for digging us out of this hole. Who is willing to make some difficult cuts and who isn't. I know our taxes are going to have to go up thanks to all of Bush's and Obama's (and both congresses) spending over the past 8 years.
It is not a good time to raise taxes on people. We are hurting. So if they are going to make us tighten our belts further...than I want to see them tighten the heck out of their belts too. Let's just say...I want the government to do their share when it comes to making cuts and sacrifices. I know the american people will haev to do it...so I want our elected officials do too.
I am sooo sick of both sides right now. heck congress has not even done a budget this year. It was suppost to be done back in April. Neither side seems upset about that either. Which tells me everything I need to know about ALL Of them and how serious they are about our tax payer dollars and not wasting them.

He already has started cutting the government. Gates has made several recommendations for reducing the devence budget and several of the heads of departments have also been recommending reductions. It would help if the senate would confirm the rest of his cabinet. They have holds on several department heads.
We, the public, need to hold the Senate responsible. Congress has been doing their jobs and the president has been doing his but everything gets blocked by the senate.

Congress has not even passed a budget this year...so how do we know how much they are spending and on what? We don't. Epic failure on their part. The budget is a basic job function for them. Why isn't Obama screaming about where the budget is? It was legally suppost to be done and voted on in April. If no one has a budget...how do we know how much is being spent and how we even have to spend.
I agree the confirmations need to be speed up.
