Why o you think the famous writer John Donne chose island to compare man, while there are many things which he could use?

Well because an island is most often isolated. It's not easy to live in an island if you are alone and most of the time you need a boat to reach an island. And man cannot isolate himself from others. He needs other people to be able to live happily.

hi because he was trying to show how cut off a man would be alone on an islnad just surrounded by nothing but water. we all need one other even if we do not think so at times. To be alone with nobody to talk to, nobody to share fun or worry or any of life's perplexities at all. Its a like the song Barbara Streisand made popular, People Who Need People are the luckiest People in the World. This is true as when we have nobody we sort shrivel up inside and become sour and very bitter too.

Yes you're right about that. Man is indeed a very profound and complex being that it has a lot of face, that is why there are many things which John Donne "the writer" could have used to compare it with. However, as life complexities developed as time passes so as our individuality. Each and every one of us has its own thinking, we have our own perspective of different things and our insight is so diverse that what you think about certain ideas may not or will not be the same as mine. On this ground alone, may explain why John chooses an island in comparison to "Man". This quote of John "No man is an island" is very much popular nowadays, in all walks of life you can hear someone somewhere quoting this statement. This catch phrase is used so many times already that it become somehow a "cliche" to some. But I think John is right, no man is indeed an island. Island is defined as a bulk of land surrounded by water, that piece of earth is standing there on its own, minding it's own business. It does not mind who enters its properties and just letting nature take its course. And by that definition, MAN is nowhere nearer that description. Man as God made us to be, is sociable, we mingle with everyone, with everybody, because without other people we couldn't live long. We need each other to live the life God wanted us to live. We have our own purpose and that is in one way or another to be of help to our brothers and sisters. To love them, care for them and to compliment each other. To share laughter and tears, to give each other hugs and kisses and to argue on stuffs to make things clearer. To support one another through thick or thin and see to it that life would be a better place to live in for you for them and for the future generations to come. :)
