I have been trying to improve my knowledge of Spanish by watching Spanish-language movies on VHS and DVD from the library. I have seen some absolutely great Mexican films such as MARIA CALENDARIA, NOSOTROS LOS POBRES, LA PERLA and LOS OLVIDADOS. I would be interested in learning about other good Spanish-language films from Mexico and other countries. Do you have any favorites?

Hi Gladread!
I have heard that Pan's Labyrinth is really good. Some call it a fairy tale for adults. It's a horror film that takes place in 1945 in facist Spain where a young girl travels with her sickly, pregnant mother to be with her cruel stepfather. She creates a fantasy world to survive the harsh reality of her real world. She meets a faun who tells her she must complete three horrible tasks in order to ever see her real father again.
I believe you can get it in Spanish with English subtitles. The original title is El Laberinto Del Fauno. It was selected by Mexico to represent the best foreign film at the Oscar's one year. It's supposed to be an excellent film! Good luck with improving your Spanish.

Hi tinym8,
In fact, I recently saw Pan's Labyrinth. I liked it so much I watched it twice!
See it and you will never forget it. I highly recommend this film to anyone over the age of 14, even though it is sometimes painful to watch. It is available with English subtitles.
Gracias!
