Have you ever done any freelance work online?

By this I mean through a freelance site like GAF, odesk, microworkers or even mturk. I have tried applying for jobs...I did get scammed by someone through GAF but that hasn't deterred me from trying to get a freelance job. What are your hints and tips for being the person who stands out from the crowd to land a job through gaf or odesk?

Hey there! I have GOOD experiences to share about both Amazon turk and cloudcrowd. Cloudcrowd paid me like instantly without even payout request! And amazon I chose work which was a little high paying and interesting, and Have already accumulated more than the payout. But am in no hurry to cash out:) Golden rule (I keep posting in almost every post) - NEVER pay any money to get a JOB. Now 'job' is different from paying for education. If you pay for course material and useful information that's not the same as paying to use a freelancing job site/survey site. You shdn't need to pay for the later! For Odesk et al, I feel one needs to have a portfolio of work which is not possible unles you do work :) So, suggesiton is to try other less competitive sites first and build up a reputation and portfolio and parallely, keep bidding in Odesk....you never know!

Most freelance sites are good however you still have to be careful of the provider as some providers may just take your work & not pay you. I wish you all the best with your freelance work.

I don't think it is so much standing out from the crowd with some of the freelance sites. They just go for whoever is cheapest. I like Mechanical Turk and have just signed up with Microworkers which looks similar. I'll also have a look at Cloud Crowd after seeing them on here. I signed up with one of the freelance sites ages ago. I won my first project this year for a bid of $30. Once I agreed to do the work, he then e mailed me and told me he would be paying just $5. If I'd conitnued with it, I would have been charged a $5 fee. Another promised me $50 for 1000 word article. This is in line with what some websites etc pay for articles so thought this sounded fine. I got the first article over to him and then he decided it would be $50 for 100 articles. I politely declined. I would have spent more in an electricity using my computer than I ever would have earned.

Wow, I know that doing freelance jobs online is "cheap labour" but having the employer change the amount they want to pay, that's not right.

One way to get more jobs in odesk is by writing and winning more exams. If you are able to pass exams with good marks then the employers will be more interested in you. You know that the exams in odesk is not so easy. So if you pass more exams your profile will be more attractive than others who applied to the same job. This is very important if you don't have any experience certificate to show employers. More over writing exams in odesk is free. But GAF (now freelancer.com) charges about 5$ per exam.

I have noticed with gaf that the tests aren't free...I guess that's how they make a bit more money.
