I typically don't lend a whole bunch of things to my friends unless they ask for it and I don't think I've ever been asked for something like that. If I had been asked, I would have done it if they really needed it, of course. How could I refuse something like that to my friend?
I would be hesitant, though, to lend my friends something really expensive, especially if they were known to be kind of careless. Someone I know was going on vacation and their friend wanted to borrow their $10,000 truck and she said no way. They've got 3 kids and both of them work at a restaurant. There's no way they would lend something that expensive even to a friend because they really just can't risk it. They wouldn't be able to afford it if something were to happen.
