pioneers then, fakers now

I'm a bit saddened by this nation famous for being the pioneers of the things we use everyday but now also famous for the 'imitation industry' of clothing and accessories, pharmaceuticals and pirated cds.

Can you give me examples for your country being a pioneer in the industry?
How come the people in your country started to imitate instead of being creative?
