Poorest of the poor

India
June 30, 2010 7:45am CST
Friends, our legislators get a salary of 16000 rupees per month plus tons of benefits, free air travel, free accommodation, free telephone in official residence and home city, travel by train with family even servants and lot of perks. Now they demand salary of 80001 per month, so that they will be the highest paid in government, the central government secretaries get the highest salary of 80000 per month. These representative, whom we have elected have other demands too. Because they are the law makers, they will get it passed without any hitch as could get it done in the past. Many of them don’t know how to sign their name properly. I would like to call them as ‘poorest of the poor’. Our youth are unable to get decent jobs, many will not get pension after retirement, but these peoples’ representative will enjoy lifelong pension for rest of life if they complete a five year term. This is just intolerable. What about your place, comment on this and share your views. Professor

Your right tigeraunt! Inauguration just happened yesterday but I really fear for the high expectations of our fellowmen. I'd like to take note that we must not compare our President to his mom or dad. I feel sorry for him 'coz he has to be burden from it. Expectations are there but we must also take part for the reforms as " government for people.

It is the same here in the States. And we also pay for x prez salary so they dont have to worry really about the little feller. HEalth care and every thing taken care of. WE dont get anything like that when we retire have to fight tooth and nail to get what we have put into the kitty to get paid when we do retire. I hate it adn dont think they really deserve all that money probably even when they are in office for now all they do is fleece AMerica

Looks like there is not much difference to the situation in my country. The division of the country's economy is not distributed evenly so that explains the big gap between the rich and the poor. Those who are in the affluent society are those who begged to be voted in office during the country's general election with sweet promises that once voted, the economic situation of individuals will changed for the better. Hope remains hope until the next election and the poor remains poor but the rich become richer. Only those who are closely connected to the politicians are lucky to get a bigger chunk of the country's wealth. I am sorry to see those who have worked so hard but are not being compensated fairly. The only recourse is to work in another country where they skill and knowledge are much appreciated and needed.

Well, knowing what they are paid right now might seem like it is very little money, but when you take into consideration all of the benefits that they are receiving, the demands that they are making are irrational. I think that it isn't right that so many elected officials in many different countrie take their own well-being into account before they even think about the lives of their constituents.

That's terrible.. the key to reforms are the people and how they elect their leaders who has the adequate political will for change.

Hi Professor, This appears to be true no matter where we live. I think that the salaries of elected officials should be decided by an independent Board that has no ties to government. These people should not be allowed to give themselves a raise in salary whenever they want. Also they should not be allowed to collect a pension until they reach retirement age. Blessings.

What kind of leaders are those? Why did people make the mistake of choosing selfish leaders who only think of themselves? I feel sad hearing the abuses that these government people are committing just to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor. There has to be changes as soon as possible.

Oh no! The common denominator of these so called "leaders" they tend to have a double personality in money matters. They became greedy and deceitful. Even here in the Philippines, it's an issue. Politicians/leaders got highest salary among others even though their work doesn't require much strength. :(

All over the world, it seems the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, so the economic divide widens. Here in the UK, we have a new Conservative Prime Minister (David Cameron) and he is already cutting benefits for the sick and unemployed, which seems unfair as they often need the money the most.

Hello Professor, I'm in Australia now, and it really is the lucky country. While there are many poor people here it's no where as bad as in Asia. The unemployment rate is around 4.5%, and I (at almost seventy years old) have been able to get part time work to suppliment my pension. Whenever I feel sorry for myself, I always know there are millions worse of than me, and that makes me feel selfish. Mike.

hi professor Well I will say this most of our represetatives in congress and the senate are well educated so they can write their own names, but yes they get a lot of perks that we the people do not always get. Their salries are sure a whole lot bigger than most of ours. We do nave a pretty good Social Security system here in the US but right now our huge problem is the joblessness, so many people are still out of wo rk, and since jobless people do not spend much in a lot of stores, a number of smaller stores are going bankrupt or just closing as they do not have enough business to afford to keep their stores open. However my own son has finally got a job after one year and a half. He is so much happier now too.Its really harder on a man as he seems to eqater his worth with the job he holds.

. It turns out, members of Indian parliament follows the style of Indonesian parliamentarians ... ... or members of the Indonesian parliament who follows the style of Indian MPs? I do not know but there are similar, ie both are busy asking for salary increase rather than busy manage the interests of the people who have elected them. for this time, all members of the Indonesian parliament struggling ask money which they call as "fund aspiration" to the Government. They want, every member of parliament is given one billion rupiah (in exchange of dollars, 100 million dollars). Think of it!
