Some countries are considering stopping legal immigration into their countries for a little while as a means to helping with the high unemployement issue. With so many of thier own citizens out of work and few new jobs becoming available, some say they don't see the point of letting more people in who will only compete with the poeple already there for the few job openings there are.
What do you think of this idea? Should countries stop allowing new citizens in until this crisis is over? Will it help? Will it cause unemployement to go down?

I was going to agree with that but then I read taskr's reply and now I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not. I don't think the US should stop all legal immigration but maybe it should be limited. Also, don't immigrants who come here to go to school pay for their education so that helps the colleges.

American is not one the countries considering it. Part of Europe are. I personally don't know if it will help or hurt their economy. Personally I think we should nto cut off legal immigrants here in the US. they just need to stop the illegal ones.

I completely agree. Not only can each country decide it's immigration laws but it can decide how many to let in.
I just had never heard of using it to stop or ease unemployement and did not know if this was a viable idea. I know some countries have unemployement rates higher than ours and did not know if it would actually work for them.

Actually, that sounds like a pretty good idea. Makes sense.

I think it's an idea that could easily backfire. Legal immigration of hard working, ambitious people can CREATE jobs. Just look at all the laundromats, dry cleaners, restaurants, and other businesses that are run by immigrants who came here legally. Those people are paying taxes, and creating jobs.
Oddly enough everywhere we've lived the places my wife goes to to have clothes altered are run by immigrants from Greece, Russia, or most recently, France.

Your right. They do come in and create jobs..or at least by starting their own businesses create a job for themselves and the money they make and spend helps the economy.
I don't know if this is a good solution...but it definately being thought about in some countries. Especially the ones with HUGE unemployment numbers.

I don't think it's a very wise idea but, then again, I don't know the situation in every other country. As has already been mentioned, legal immigrants create jobs but those jobs are mainly in their tight knit communities. There's also the issue of the talent and skill that some immigrants bring to the countries they immigrate to which can also be responsible for job creation, as well.

i think its a nice idea. It will help local citizens to maximize their potential earnings from their own country while serving their own country at the same time.
