Do you think Mahatma Gandhi's principles would work in today's scenario?

Mahatma Gandhi gave India its freedom against the Britishers. He believed in non-violence. He said "If someone slaps you on one cheek, show him your other cheek. Don't hit him back. He will eventually feel so embarrassed about his actions, that he'll stop. "
Mahatma Gandhi is revered all over the world. Does his philosophy work in today's competitive, super ambitious world?
I feel one can use elements from his teachings, but not his preachings completely. I'm not sure it'll work. What does everyone else think?

Well mostly here they don't follow his principles. It's hard to find people like him. And he also said that "I don't really mind if you follow my rules or not. It's your wish. If you want you can also put my picture in a photo frame and hang me on a wall or else just follow my scriptures". He was really a great man and he worked hard for the freedom of the country. If you see an indian note it has his picture on it. But practically speaking it's the money that moves around and not his principles. Every time i see any money i sometimes ask my conscience if what i am doing is right or wrong. It's the main reason why he is also known as the Father of Our Nation. Don't get me wrong but that;s what i think.
