Mostly about apples and oranges...

Should we eat apples with the skin on or off? Actually there are arguments on both sides, eating it with skin is better because the skin contains a lot of extra vitamins, but there is the risk of pesticide residual. For oranges, there are no such arguments, it's more of a personal preference. Some like it cut with skin on and some peel off the skin and eat it. For me, I eat apples with the skin on it but I like to peel off the orange skin. So, what do you think about peeling an apple and orange?

Not only preferences differ from person to person but also in the same person depending on mood :) I don't think I ever ate orange skin it was quite bitter the few times I nicked it by mistake. But when I eat oranges I don't like to peel them, I prefer to cut them in quarters and hold the skin while I sink my teeth in the juicy fruit. As for apples I sometimes eat them with skin, sometimes I peel it off. Regardless of how I am going to choose to eat them I always wash them well. It's a curse of modern times. We now have everything available even off season, but the price we pay is all the chemical residue leftover that I am sure cut the benefits of eating the fruit by much.

I'm with you in the way you choose the fruit. ALso the ones that look way bigger than normal. There are even some fruits that I used to love but don't really taste like anything in here. Strawberries are one of those fruits. I was used to the small but very sweet ones back home. Each small fruit had inside the incomparable sweetness that makes strawberries so special for me. Then I came to canada. Strawberries here can be bought any time of the year, look perfect, are huge.....no taste, however. So sad.

The smaller strawberries definitely taste better! Now some people in my neighbourhood are trying to grow their own fruits and vegetables in small plots, they are utterly frustrated with the big, pretty but no taste ones!!

Very true. I'm concerned about the chemical residue too, usually I would not buy fruits that look too perfect as I am sure these are the ones that would be genetically modified or have too much pesticide on them.

I eat most fruit with the skin on but wash it well first. Most of the vitamins and a lot of the fibre are in the skin. Likewise with potatoes and carrots, unless I am mashing potatoes I never peel them. I do peel oranges and citric fruit though, although the pith (the white inner part of the skin )is very good for you. It contains the highest amount of bioflavonoids (an antioxidant), and vitamin C of the whole orange as well as fibre, the outer skin contains limonene which is reputed to be a good anti cancer nutrient, so I guess we should eat more of it. I do use it a lot in cooking.

Yes when I boil new potatoes I only wash them, and I never peel potatoes when I make chips (or fries), all the vitamin C is right under the skin, it is the best part of the potato nutritionally

hi blue I eat my apples with the skin on and my oranges without that heavy peel. I would indeed think that orange peel is really not that good for'you either although I often peel some of the rind to flavor desserts with.so I guess its edible enough.I always wash my apples first with soapy water then rinse thoroughly.,

hi hatley, are you sure soapy water is good? I have another suggestion. Use toothpaste! We use that to rub each and every grape to remove chemical residue. There are also some kind of fruit and vegetable wash sold in the supermarket, I haven't tried those but maybe it's better than soap?

Me too am lazy to peel the apple, or even cut it into slices, so I'll just bite into it whole. I like the hard ones, taste great crunching it, yummy...

It is natural to eat apples with the skin on, apparently the skin of the orange needs to be taken off/peel off because it is not considered as food. We have to be careful of eating the apples wit the skin because it is expose to a lot of pesticides and bacteria too. Definitely we have to wash and rinse it well before eating to be secured that it could not put our health into risk, moreover if we feel to eat by peeling off the skin it is also good. There is no problem on oranges, eating it is so simple yet very safe because it is only the orange pulps we used to eat.

Orange skin can be used and cooked in some foods (refer to above for great recipes ) We must always be very careful when handling food, especially those taken raw because it might have a direct impact on our stomach.

they say that it's healthy to eat the skin of the apple and even orange..i've tried eating orange skins before..but it's already dried because it's a chinese snack..but overall i still prefer to eat them when they are already peeled..so even if these fruits are always available in the house, i'm normally ignoring them..unless somebody will volunteer to peel some for me..i just don't like peeling fruits..

Yes, I like that orange snack too, a bit sour and sweet. I think the peeled and cut fruits are generally easier to eat, you won't even have juice on your hands :p

I mostly eat apples with their skin on, but I make sure that I have washed the skin throughly to avoid eating foreign materials and dirts. I love oranges but I cannot imagine myself eating them with their skin on. Are oranges skin edible? Aren't oranges skin sour?

Orange skin is indeed edible. Sometimes we cook dessert and we can put either fresh or dried orange peel (thinly sliced) into the soup to enhance the taste, but of course, make sure the skin is thoroughly washed and cleaned.

I usually eat apples with the skin on. I just wash it thoroughly to remove the pesticides. As for oranges I usually remove the skin first and eat the inside after.

Same as me, do you think plain water is sufficient to remove the pesticide?

I eat the whole apple complete with seeds, and orange peel sometimes you, but if I get lazy delivery only half and I take all the juice.
• Singapore

You can actually eat the seeds? First person I've heard of who does that. How does it taste like? I know its good to eat grape seeds and watermelon seeds, didn't know about apple seeds at all.

I peel of the skin on both. True, most of the vitamins of fruits are on the skin but nowadays you can't be sure if they're loaded with pesticides or not.

I agree, I just thought it would be fine if we wash it thoroughly.

I have the same habit as you.I often eat apple with skin and eat orange peel off the skin. The apple's skin is hard to peel off.The orange's skin is easy to peeloff. So many people do like this.

Just use a peeler, should be quite easy, practise until you get seasoned. There are people who can peel the whole apple without breaking the skin at all.

For apples, I eat them with skin, I never eat any peeled apples. I like the mouthfeel of apple skin. And for oranges, I'll peel them. I'm wondering how can orange skin be eaten? It's bitter! But, we often immerse peeled orange skin into boiled hot water, and drink the water like drink tea. Orange skin is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine called Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae. It is considered to be able to reduce internal heat.

I must try the orange skin in hot water soon, I can feel internal heat coming up! Thanks!
