shirleyenglish,
I think it is important to have a liking of swimming where it will bring you endless enjoyable time while learning and eventually swim.
To be able to enjoy swimming, one has to be able to acquire some form of water confidence whereby you basically have to enjoy being in the water, learning how to breath with your mouth, open your eyes without the aid of goggles and keeping your balance at all times in the water.
Above the aforementioned, I have to stress the importance of proper attiring like swimming suits or trunks, swimming cap (some pools are pretty strict with this) and most of all health - make sure you are certified if you have a preexisting medical condition like asthma, heart problems and etc..
In most of the public pools, qualified lifeguards do conduct basic swimming lessons on their off duty time or if the country requires swimming coaching license then, there will be qualified coaches around - just check with the staff at the swimming pool for such coaches and their schedules.
I hope that the above information will be able to help you get around with your interest in swimming. Remember whatever you do or decide here, always enjoy yourself.

P.S.
If you have eye sight problems like short sightedness then do get yourself a pair of corrected lens goggles.
Sorry that I forgot to mention this above.

You are welcome, shirleyenglish.
I thank you for this best response award as well and I hope that you would be able to find a swimming instructor at wherever you are. Learning to swim is really not difficult and once you receive lessons from a qualified instructor, you should be gliding the waters in no time.
All the best in your quest and hope to hear from you again.

My son just enter in swimming lesson this summer. It would be better to join in a group having lesson for swimming because through that you can get peers and learn from them as well. But it would also be depends on your skills, maybe you are already develop the skills but it just need to enhance and develop more. I suggest to enroll in swimming lesson to have more fun and learning and peers as well.
