Does link building really work?

I've been thinking of ways to increase traffic on my website. I was wondering how I should start with link building and if it really works in increasing traffic.

Introduce your website on other social netwroking sites such as facebook, my space, twitter etc.so that more people could see it.Dont forget to mention its Salient features In short.

Well, it does make your rankings in the search engines better, and since a lot of people use search engines to find stuff they need, it helps. But it only works if you have optimized your site for the search engines in other ways as well. In my experience, you should not expect to get very many visitors directly from the other site because of a link exchange though, but you could get a few more, I guess.
