My daughter so far has done a donar card to donate her organs if she was to die and if they were needed. She has been excepted for the donar register, but she was upset to learn that she can not be considered yet to give blood. The reason for why she can not give blood is due to her weight,as she needs to put on over another stone in weight to be giving her blood.

In our country, it's men who are donating blood. Women are exempted because we bleed every month (menarch) and so according to them, it is not a good idea to remove blood from women. I think the doctors are right. She has to prove to be physically fit or healthy to be able to donate blood.Being underweight may not be a good time to be donating blood.

this is a new learning from me. it's amazing that only men are allowed to donate blood in your country because women have their monthly periods. there are certain requirements/protocols that need to followed for blood letting and sad to say i am not qualified too.

hey jugs!! I haven't tried donated mine. I think that I won't do it's either I'm anemic or high blood when I check my blood pressure. I got to take care of my weight for now. You must be really proud of having a daughter like her. Always willing to help and never hesitates to give without asking for anything. I hope that she can donate one soon.

Hi jugsjugs, Your daughter sounds like a very compassionate person who truly wants to help others. Tell her that she can do much more by staying healthy and that soon she will be able to give blood providing she takes care of her body. It sounds like she is very young, so the chances are she will be able to give blood many times. Blessings.

When I was young, I couldn't give blood because I was almost a stone to low. I wanted to give it for a sick friend. The way his health plan works is you either replace the blood you use by having people donate to replace it or you pay for it. I tried to donate. I lied and said I was 108 pound, almost the 110 they wanted. They said if I was close to the weight they would take it. Unfortunately they put me on a scale and said no way. I wasn't even close to 110. Fast forward 35 years. I tried to donate again. I'm well over 110 pounds now. LOL This time I passed all the requirements up until the time to take my blood pressure. The top number must be at least 100 and under some number to donate. Well, most people with low blood pressure have the top number at least 110. Ha ha. Not me. The ambulance guy was getting frustrated by not hearing anything and couldn't get a reading. He's a well trained paramedic. He was looking in the low normal ranges. I said to try lower, I have very low BP. It was really low that day. 80/50. He said I couldn't give blood with that BP reading. I was so bummed. I really wanted to donate. I will have to accept the fact that I just can't donate blood.

Your daughter is to be admired for wanting to help save lives although she must care for herself first and make sure she is old enough and not underweight. I was told I didn’t weigh enough when I first offered blood although that would not be the case anymore! These days I have been informed that I am not allowed to give blood because I spent time in the U.K. in 1989; it’s something to do with mad cow disease. I would be interested to know how long it will be before I can donate!

For me it wasn't that bad to give blood, after all giving blood to other person for me is noble if your intension is to help that person to revive life or at least extend life, and another thing is that, getting blood from you as long as it is in a right and proper amount can make can a person younger and more beautiful because as old blood take away from you, your body has an own reconstruction manner on where it produce new blood that is need for your body which is the reason why it makes you younger and more beautiful. It's more like reconstruction of new you. But in case of your daughter, being underweight doesn't qualify her to donate blood cause she herself can have trouble of doing it. Maybe it's better to look after her weight first that giving blood.

THat's good for her!! haha =D I'm a blood donor as well, and it's definitely a joy to be able to help others.. hehe ^_^ BUT in order to do so, one has got to be kinda healthy, and it's ok to be overweight, as long as they do not have any diabetes or other illness with them.. hehe ^_^ BUt being underweight might be a problem, for the donor might not be able to replace the red blood cells fast enough, and thus might cause them to faint frequently any time.. hehe

I am sorry about that. How much does your daughter weigh? Does she need to lose or gain weight before she gives blood? Maybe she can make this happen by doing either one of the two. I hope that she will be able to give blood.

Here we can get an over ride if the family doctor will give proof that the person is healthy enough to donate. It may be a benefit if she went to get checked out this way if there is an issue with her weight and health it can be taken care of other wise she can get a note and do it anyway. Also kudos to her for being generous in this fashion. So many do not realize what a blessing it is to other people for there to be blood already donated and waiting for accident victims, people whose surgeries have taken a bad path or even delivering mothers who begin to have bleeding issues. For all these people these donars are saints who saved their lives and applause to them all.

I have a donor card also, but I only wanted to give blood once. I am a sissy but I wanted to do something when there was a terror attack (9/11). The only thing I could think of was to give blood. I wasn't allowed to donate because I have health problems.

Your daughter is truly an altruist. I wish her well. Ask her to wait and gain some weight. It is a good think to donate blood. It will help to save someone's life.

lucky her. She could donate her body. I wish I could, but I couldn't. I also want to donate blood but I'm not allowed. The reason for this is that I have a lot of "viruses" in my blood already. Besides the typical shots that we get, I have 3 strains of H-Fever on my blood.

I wanted to donate my blood as weel but I am under age and they need my parents permission if I want to donate. I think I will donate my blood as soon as I reach the age required. One thing is that, they say that it is safer to donate bloods in a hospital than somewhere outside like in the shopping mall or any hall. They say the hygiene problem will arise easily.

It is very good that she wants to give blood, but it is important that she have enough resources to sustain her health if she does give blood. That is why there is a weight requirement. She also will need to be well nourished and have high enough iron supplies and not be anemic when she does give blood.

I think it is great that your daugther wants to give blood. I know that there are have some restrictions about weight. They want to make sure that your body can handle the situation before they let you give blood. I can understand why your daughter is upset that she isn't allowed to give blood yet, but the rules are made to protect her and her health. I am not able to give blood, because of the medicine that I am taking, but I think it is a gresat initiative that your daugther has taken, and she will be able to donate blood when she reaches 50 kg (or whatever the restrictions are in your country).

My sister is 21, and she's never weighed more than a hundred pounds in her life. She's 100% healthy, but she has a really fast metabolism. She'll probably have to have her first kid before she's able to gain enough weight to give blood. She was pretty upset when she first found out too, but she's since gotten over it. There's really not much she can do about it. Some people are just born skinny and have trouble gaining weight. They can still donate organs, and later in life after the metabolism slows down or they have kids then they'll be able to give blood.

Yeah, you're right. So those who can't donate their blood today, there's nothing to get upset because later as time passes by someday maybe you will be able to donate your blood.

How old is your daughter? And what´s her height and weight? She doesn´t have to be upset: if she is worried about other people´s health, with not start with hers? Happy posting!

You should be proud of your daughter. It's very rare for people to be unselfish and give a part of them to other people. If she needs to gain weight for her to donate blood then help her by giving her the right vitamins and minerals and feed her with nutritional foods. She has to have more than enough blood before she can give any so please assist her. You have trained her well to be concern of others. Help her in materializing her dream. Congratulations, jugsjugs!

Oh! That's really great that she wanted to donate blood, but unfortunately one of the requirements that is needed when you are going to donate blood is that you are weighing at least 50 kilograms. I think it is better for her to eat more nutritious food to gain more weight. And by the way, how old is she? Because she should at least 18 years old for her to be able to donate blood.
