Well, it depends exactly what you plan on selling. But i would imagine that food would always sell better than clothes. The food business in the states is one of the only not too affected by the recession. I read somewhere that half of the money Americans spent on food is spent on eating while out and about.
I guess the most important thing to consider is what is more cost effective to stock. Food does spoil, while clothes aren't. But food isn't classed as a luxury.

It is really hard to decide which is the best business adventure to go for. For me, apparel can be more profitable. Since food business can't be a hard choice for survival under such business atmosphere. Look around all the restaurants, they have to cut the price down in order to attract more customers. Meanwhile, apparel still working all right I guess. Women loves to look pretty. They will constantly shop for new clothes for the new season. So, it might be the best bet.

All depends on what you are trying to sell in each of these catagories. The only good thing is that in the apparel business you do not have to worry about the goods spoiling.
The margins on clothing are somewhat lower than they are on food items but you have to take into account the waste in food. But with clothing if you don't have a item that is poplular and don't have the right sizes then you will lose out on the sale. That is usually the biggest problem with clothing retailing, you order a mixed lot of sizes and the medium, large and extra large sell quickly, then you are left with the smalls and extra smalls and have to reduce them in order to sell them.

I would suggest both, both are required by man. whether it is food or apparel shops both thrive. My father correctly puts in Roti (food) and Kapada (clothing) are the essentials.
