How Do You Relieve A Stiff Neck?

Philippines

Seriously guys how do you relieve a stiff neck? I am in a lot of pain by using the wrong pillow. Don't ask me how I got that pillow, don't ant to be angry with the person who took my pillow. Not only my neck is painful but also my shoulders. It's stiff and hard and painful. I wish there was a spa in this city but sadly there isn't a good one. I know that taking a stone bath (ganbayonko in Japanese) really relieves this body pains as I have tried it before) really helps but it isn't just available at this point. Any suggestions on what to do aside from taking pain relievers?

Stretching and massaging should help. When I wake up in the morning, I always do a series of stretches. I do my neck by tilting my head side to side and rolling it in a semi-circle with my chin alomst on my collar bones.

This really works. If this doesn't do the job or if your neck actually freezes so that you cannot move it, I would suggest you try and get in to see a chiropractor. Good luck!hugs!

I have not tried seeing a chiropractor...what do they do? How do they perform the treatments? I have tried Physical Therapy but well it's all machines mostly but it helped me with my back ache last time.

I'm in the same boat. I need a memory foam pillow but they are expensive and the ones I found at Ross for $10 are soo small I'd need like 2 or 3 (about $30 for all 3). I gently stretch my neck throughout the day. Use a warm cloth that you've run through hot water or soak it and gently ring it then put it in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds just to warm it a little. Ask someone to give you a gentle massage.

Take a hot shower, and massage the muscles in your neck, take a tylenol and just try to relax. I hate stiff neck, I have that a lot as I lay in weird ways.

I know what you mean about not taking too many pills, I was taught to not take medicine unless necessary. Even tylenol for headaches I won't take unless it's an excruciating one. Maybe a hot tea? I know some of them have good natural things in them, maybe even to relieve pain. A heating pad as well may help.

lol you are right stiff neck is a big No NO. It's really awful and painful not to mention. I am trying not to pop some pill as I take a lot of medications every single day, my poor liver and kidneys suffers already so as much as possible I try not to drink pills unless it is very much needed.

Hello Candyfairy21, Even I suffer from the same problem. But my stiff neck is due to cervical and my shoulders and upper arms ache because of my thyroid. I do regular neck exercises and also do certain exercises which are for both neck and shoulders. This way my neck is much better these days. I case of pillow, your pillow should always be soft and thin so that your neck is on the same level as your shoulders.

I have not found a good pillow so far. All the pillows I have tried are just good for the first 2 months after that it becomes sagging. So again here comes the dilemma.

Hi Candyfairy21, It is really difficult to move if you have a stiff neck. I also suffered from that pain last month. I could not move my head without the combination of my whole body. Anyway, let me share some tips in order for you to relieve that easily without taking and drinking any medicine or medicament. If you are familiar in using an efficascent oil or vicks vaporub, you may use either one of them to massage on the part of the neck where you feel the pain. Do it every night before you sleep, until the pain was gone. You dont need to put too much of the oil or vaporub, just apply a little amount on the part where there is pain. You can also use that if ever you feel pain in some part of your body, to ease the pain resulting from muscle fatigue, headache and back pain. I do hope that this can help you. And will avoid you to take too much pain relievers.

Try to lie flat on the bed. This may feel weird at first but it will help. Do this for a couple of nights. Also try massaging the stiff area. Try a hot compress over the area for about 20 minutes or more. You can also try to correct your position in bed if ever that's the problem. Hope this helps. This is what i did when my neck and shoulders were hurting because of my pillow.

Press a cold compress against your neck for 10 minutes, and then replace that with something very hot for ten minutes. Alternate a couple of times. That's the advice I got from one of my doctors. I was told to make the second compress as hot as I could stand it.

Thanks for the tip Ambie Pam. I remember about those heating pads used by my physical therapist it felt so good but I cannot find them in my local medical supply shop. After the moist heat therapy I get the TENS (transelectric nerve stimulation) but geez the therapy cost me a lot lol. Guess I have to go with your tip. Thanks.

i think that heat is your best bet in dealing with that sort of issue. either use a heating pad or a hot water bottle but only leave it on for about 10 minutes at a time.

When I get a stiff neck, the only thing that I can do to relieve it is to lie down to sleep till the next day. A good sleep helps a lot to relieve it. I don't take any medicine for it, but sleep. Take care, candyfairy.

I know nothing about the stone baths that you've referred to. But, what I do know something about is massage therapy or also a chiropractic adjustment. As far as the chiropractor goes, this can be relatively expensive to have done, but there are a lot of health insurance companies that will cover this care so it takes down the cost quite a bit. Massage therapy is typically accessible by most people, but you have to find a good therapist.

ain't that just the pits? anyway, i've suffered some in the last couple of years and i always try to relieve the tension first by having a hot bath. afterwards, i get mild liniment and massage it on my neck lightly. when the pain's too much, i use those mentholated strips and leave them on for a whole day.

A warm or cold compress... depending on your preference. Either works for minor pains like a "crick in the neck".

Hello mrscallands22 Agree that cold compress is also good for a stiff neck. I always use hair dryer to blow hot air to my stiff neck, it helps.

When I have stiff neck problem, I will turn my head to the left and to the right. After several times, I will turn my head up and down for several round as well. Do not worry if you feel pain. Feeling pain means you are stretching the right nerve. Try to turn the head to the direction where you feel the pain most. By doing this, the nerve will be fixed. Besides, some simple warm up exercise will help also. Happy posting and good luck!

Scrap the pillow all together, rest your head in the crook of your arm. It works great for me. I rarely use a pillow at all, you could also try folding up a spare blanket. Sincerely and With Appreciation.

I'm a side sleeper and I make sure that my pillow is soft and high. It works for me. I do get aches on shoulders and necks sometimes. But it's not from the pillow I sleep on. It's more from work. I've been advised to use a cold pad. But amazingly a very warm pad actually works for me.

It happens to me always. If my sleeping position is not proper and wasn't able to turn my body for long hours or my pillow is high, for sure I'll have stiff neck the next morning. This is always my problem. The neck is so painful, shoulder and some part of my back part. It is so hard to like sideway or downward. What I usually do is I'll try to massage it and put hot compress, so that the muscle will be relaxed and the blood can circulate properly.

Try to lay flat on the bed when sleeping. This may feel weird at first but it will help. Do this for a couple of days. Try to massage the part where it feels stiff. If it's numb, try using a hot compress for 20 minutes. This method worked for me and I really hope it works for you. Hope this helped :)
