Do you think that contact lenses and Glasses make your eyes worse.

July 3, 2010 3:46am CST
I have read but haven't read enough about the fact that, contacts and glasses make a persons eyes worse. But I do know that I didn't need glasses but the opticians offered me some, I was about 6 or 7 and I said yes to my parents, and my eyes know are worse than ever, getting worse and worse every-time I go to the opticians etc. If I "could go back in time I would choose not to get the glasses". But also I have also read that they have done a test that contacts were put into monkeys and the monkeys who had the long sited lenses in became long sited, and the ones who had short sited lenses in for people who are short sighted, became short sighted. Their point was that they eyes adapt to how strong your glasses are and maybe each time I get a new stronger prescription my eyes adapt to the stronger glassses making my eyesight worse each time. What do you all think?

The fault lies not in the glasses but in the frequency you use them. Ideally one should be using their glasses all the time (of course, sleep & bath times are exempt), but misinformed people presume that glasses are meant to be used only while reading or performing tasks that depend largely on eye, which is false. By the way, glasses don't cause your eyes to modify, they just bend the light rays, thereby adjusting them as to give you the correct vision of what you are seeing. If you're fed up of glasses and contacts, why don't you consider getting a LASIK done? Your woes will be done with - once, and for all.

LASEK is done by a laser which cuts part of the eye off...leading to many different eye, disorders sometimes.

My eyesight was already weak before I started wearing contact lenses and glasses, so I don't know. My eye doctor did tell me that contact lenses are bad for your eyes, and you should try to wear glass rather than contact lenses whenever possible. I wear contact lenses when I go out as I do not like the way I look in glasses but at home I wear glasses.

I wear glasses and contacts too, I mostly wear glasses. And apparently brown eyes are the weakest eyes...well thats what most people say. I have brown eyes.

From what i know. There are 2 different types of glasses you can buy. One thats to be used only when you are doing something that required help for your eyes and another type of eyeglass that helps improve your eyesight. I took the first one tho and i am using it everyday already, removing it only when i go to sleep or do some wash. My eyesight has worsened over the years due to that plus the playing of computer games and watching tv for long hours. Contact lens are a too much of a hassle for me and i dont use them.

hmm...not sure what two types your trying to say.. do you mean Glasses which improve your eyesight and read glasses?

i also use glasses but i dont really like it so i just use it when i use the computer or to watch tv. years ago my doctor said i have a big difference from an eye to another what means that one of my eyes sees better than the other like 13 times better the doctor said so he said that the good eye was making the other one worse bcs the good eye is what makes me see better. the other one i can see also but is not the same. so he said that he would make me an exam when i became 16 to see if i could use contact lenses bcs it helps more than the glasses. bcs with glasses your eyes focused in the same thing to see and with lenses is different bcs lenses are separated so each eye sees each thing you understand? so i think you should make that test to see if you can use lenses bcs it will help you more^^

I got a set of eyeglasses since 2006, I felt like vomiting without anticipation that it was due to eyes vision problem that was getting worse. I decided to check my eyes with the ophthalmologist and eventually I used it. I already changed 3 times within 6 years, I also tried not wearing it whenever I got home. I do computer works inside the house without using eyeglasses, but I feel like uneasy to face the screen because of the light that I could not resist looking into it. From time to time I used to wearing eyeglasses just for protection purposes. I think some eyeglasses are designed to correct human vision just like what happened to me... in my opinion I got my eyes corrected nowadays using the sufficient eyeglasses. With regards of contact lenses, I have no any idea about it because I don't use it. Anyway, we should always think that human eyes are constantly different to monkey's eyes... They have a very sensitive senses and so it applies to their vision, they are animals so testing them with the "contact lenses" would not benefit the accurateness of findings and studies of human eyes error or defect on vision. Animal eyes are always different to human eyes for sure... no matter what we are humans and their is no any "eye transplantation" being done using the eyes of monkey to human...

Yeah I know that we won't beable to eye transplantation. And I have read that the eyes become dependent on glasses and adapt to them when you where them for a long period of time. I've got new glasses with a stronger prescription and I am not goin gto wear it until my eyes worsen because, I found out that if I wear a strong prescription for 1hour or so my eyes will adapt and my old glasses will not work, this happened with the glasses i am currently wearing now and my older glasses. So I am not putting on my stronger prescription glasses yet. I haven't put them on yet. If I do within 1hr I wouldn't be able to see with the current glasses I am wearing.

I have been using glasses since I was in my primary school and till now I am still using glasses everyday for my activities to go on. Without my glasses, I can see well and not able to do my stuffs. I still can see things without my glasses, but everything looks unclear to me. After putting on glasses for so long, I can see that my eyes are sinking bit. I ever thought of trying for contact lenses, but I am so afraid to put in the contact lenses to my eyes.

I do thing contacts and glasses do make a persons eyes worse. and when I don't wear glasses..I only do when I want to rest them, I rest them for quite a while ..although I cannot see anything (blurry) ..It becomes more clearer when I put my glasses back on, like the first time I first got the glasses. Also glasses apparently puts a strain on the eyes.

Dear optometrists will prescribe you glasses because you need it. Sometimes even when you have just a slight defect it is just a matter of time until they get worse. I should have worn glasses early but I didn't and when I finally got one the grade was very high. Also by using glasses it has made my eyesight clearer and stopped the headaches and nausea altogether. When I did not wear my glasses it puts a lot of strain in my eyes.

Glasses bend the light thats why its clearer..glassses are meant to make things clearer. Also you might of been looking at things up close when you should of worn glasses and didn't thiss also makes eye sight worse. Looking at things uo close and squinting makes the eyesight worse.

Well I don't really know if that's true but I started using glasses because I needed to. I used to get a new one yearly because my eyesight got worse. I started with contact lenses in high school and since then I used the same grade.
3 Jul 10
I don't know if it is true either, but apparently a long use of glasses will make your eyes adapt to the glasses and be dependent on the glasses too. But I haven't got enough information to judge whether or not this fact is true.

My glasses are a life saver, if i didnt have them, my life would be a real struggle, i can really only see somthing clearly thats right infront of my face without them, anything more than 5cm away is blury. I first went to the opticians when i started secondary school at 11, i had been having trouble reading the board and had to be sat at the front of all my classes, my eyes were bad at primary school but once you reach secondary you become more indepent and it really was much more of a struggle. After my first visit to now (3 years) my eyes have got worse by about 3. Making them 7 and 7 1/2. According to my optician he said it was because i was still growing, which makes sense. My eyes seem to have stopped deteriating now and i have also stopped growing height wise. In way of your eyes ahving to adjust to the strength, if your optician is clear and accurate at his job then your eyes shouldnt have to adjust to the strength as they needed that much correction in the first place.

Glasses puts a strain on the eyes apparently. The muscles in your eyes do not need to move because appently the glasses bends the light for it. So its makes the eye muscles weak. However I have noticed that, when I rest my eyes and take my glasses off for a good amount of time, it makes my eyesight better at distance with my glasses on. Because some things where starting to get blurry. Also your eyes stop deteoriating when you are about 18-20 i think, when you usually stop growing..Im not sure.

Well I dont think so. I have been wearing glasses from 7 years and everyone said that you look good in your glasses and my eyes aren't gone worse by wearing glasses. I also like wearing glasses very much. It just that what suits best on your eyes. Some says they prefer contact lenses and some keep bare eyes. But i prefer glasses.
3 Jul 10
I prefer glasses to, but since I have worn stronger prescriptions for glasses my eyes have worses quickly each time. Now that I have halted and kept to one new prscription and not worn any others, my eyesight have stayed the same. I have 2 new glasses with a prescription stronger than mine and haven't worn it. My eyes have not worsened as rapidly as when I kept wearing the new stronger prescriptions each time.
