Shocking Revelation About My Beloved Vitamin E in Wikipedia

While doing my personal research about Vitamin E, I landed in a page in Wikipedia saying dietary Vitamin E is not actually good for our health but rather harmful to our health! It's not exactly written like that but the tone, you know, sounds like that. It's really outrageous! Here's the link for reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_E I will quote some here: Health effects of dietary Vitamin E [i]Prostate cancer There have been some hypothesis that Vitamin E, especially when coupled with selenium, may reduce the risk of prostate cancer[21] by 30 percent.[22] However, the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial, ("SELECT"), run from 2004 to 2008, found that vitamin E, whether taken alone or in combination with selenium, did not prevent prostate cancer.[23] The SELECT study was discontinued after independent reviewers determined that there was no benefit to the 35,000 men who were the subject of the study.[21] [edit] Congenital heart defects A case control study done in the Netherlands using food frequency questionnaires found that high maternal Vitamin E by diet and supplements is associated with an increased risk of CHD (congenital heart defects) offspring, especially when the supplements are taken in the periconception period.[24] (Note: case control studies are rated as low quality, grade 3 or 4, on a standard scale of medical evidence.[25]) The National Health Service in the United Kingdom concludes that pregnant women should: "consider avoiding taking supplemental Vitamin E tablets."[26] [edit] Vitamin E and strokes A Finnish study found that Vitamin E supplementation increased the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.[27] Vitamin E supplementation was shown to increase the risk of heart failure in a 2005 study.[28] [edit] Hepatitis According to a recent clinical trial study, long term Vitamin E supplementation results in a high rate of improvement in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis treatment.[29] [edit] Peyronie's disease Urologists commonly recommend Vitamin E supplementation as a treatment for Peyronie's disease. Some success has been reported in older trials, but those successes have not been reliably repeated in larger, newer studies.[30][/i] The information sounds negative. I admit I was really outraged when I read this because I spend a lot of money taking high doses of Vitamin E (400 I.U.) every day thinking it is good for our health and I believe in its antioxidant and anti-aging property. You know how expensive Vitamin E preparations are... But the above information is a result of research. They just presented results of their research. Who are we to question them? I am afraid there's nothing I can do but to accept the truth, the results of research, that Vitamin E is bad for our health. But I feel its really hard to accept this... Can we count on the information posted in Wikipedia? Are they reliable? Can we trust them? What's your view of this?

Well im sure you know that wikipedia is not a credable source of information as anyone who logs into the site can alter or edit information as he or she pleases. I would go find a credable source of information like WebMD and figure out whether or not those statements are true or just a bunch of bull crap. I get annoyed with wikipedia, however it is a great place to find new artist info, bio's, album names, and discography =] haha anyways thanks for posting!

Thank you for that. I think I need to check out other sites like WebMD. Based on your experience, is it safe to surf in that site? No viruses, spyware or other malware?

Most people are not aware of that there are 8 E-vitamins: Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma- and Delta Tocoferols and Trityenols . We need them all and they complete each other, but most food supplements only have the first one which is often the cheapest. Even worse, if the E vitamin is synthetic, it is actually harmful for us and should be avoided completely. The only E vitamin supplement I know of, with all eight parts and that is fully natural and not GMO, is the Wheat Germ Oil from gnld.com Maybe it is also possible to get these vitamins from food, but I cannot say exact what food. Probably cold pressed oils and not heated nuts etc. I hope this helps a bit..

Hi magtibay I took vitamin E supplements (bought over the counter) PLUS vitamin C, A and you name it. That, until I went for a visit to my scientist sister house. She was shocked by my pills. She told me (and supported it by scientific papers) that vitamin supplements had sense only when doctors gave it for specific lacks of them. Otherwise, our body does not absorb them ( we need to have them in our food). Enough vitamin E can be had if you use sunflower oil for your salad, put some ground almonds as toppers and mix raw spinach to your green salad. Take care!

I was taking viatamin suplements like mad (A, C, E) until I got hold of a scientific magazine at my sisterĀ“s house (she is a scientist). The article there said that out body did not absorb the pills: we should eat the natural sources in foods (like whole grains, legumes, meats, veggies and fruits). I knew that some vitamins were not good if we has overdoses. After that, I stopped taking the pills and began a very good diet, the DASH diet. Check it. I try to follow it as much as I can. I am feeling lately that labs are manipulating my fear of getting sick with all these suplements and other extras I buy over the counter. A doctor friend told me that if I ever needed a suplement, it would have to be decided by a doctor.
