We live in the country so when ever one of us goes to town we ask the others "do you need anything?" sometimes we will call on our cell phones and ask each other to pick something up. We have always paid each other back no matter how big it is or small. When I was working so many parents were talking about their kids owing them money and never attempting to pay them back. My kids have always paid back what ever they borrowed and I have always paid them back too. So I am just wondering what is the normal for you? If you borrow from your kids do you pay them back? Or if they borrow from you, no matter how big or small, do they pay you back?

Although you have had numerous responses, I think each has a different perspective, so here is mine.
We borrowed money from my Husband's parents. We paid them back with interest. We borrowed money from our Son, we maid regular payments to and made a lump sum at the end.
Our Son (Mine and my husband) has never borrowed money from us.
A step-son, borrowed several times. He has never paid us back. We no longer lend to him.

I think you are very smart to not lend anymore to your step son. We borrowed from my husbands parents and paid them back with interest. That was ok. Thanks for your response.

My dad used to borrow money from me and I always remind him to pay it. He gets annoyed sometimes when I ask many times. lol But there are also times when I borrow from him and he doesnt say anything. He doesnt even remind me to pay him. Its like when I borrow a certain amount of money from him, it always end up like I asked it from him. hehehe!

Sorry to hear your dad doesn't pay you back, but when you borrow from him he doesn't ask for it, that is nice of him. Thanks for your response.

Great topic Christmas!I dont think parents should borrow money from their children. It opens up touchy areas of discussion. I was at the supermarket the other day and their was a woman with at least 4 or 5 kids, running all around the store and she was saying nothing, of course. Anyways it comes time to pay and the mother didnt have enough money. She looks over at her teenage son and he literally opens his wallet and pulls out a wad of money. To me its not supposed to be that way. Why should our children pay for our mistakes, or shortages? They shouldnt . I see so many parents these days relying way too much on their kids. SHAME ON THEM! dl

Hi dloveli, thanks for the compliment.
My sister n law told me that when my husband started working at 16, he would get his pay check, keep out what he needed then give the rest to his mom for groceries and needed things. When I started working, I would buy things my mom wanted or give her money to get something. When my parents lived with us, 2 years during the winters, my dad would give me $$ every month for groceries.

Hey lou ann, hope u are having a good weekend. I have never borrowed anything from my kids. No, they do not pay me back when they borrow like they should. I have closed the bank on account of it, lol.

My one daughter seems to think I am a bank but she has always paid me back everything, although it has taken her time to do it.
We aren't doing anything this weekend. We have never been big into 4th of July events. Just got an email from our son and he is putting up a shed and needs some help with it so we are going down there tomorrow after church. Told Him I had to do my Sunday School class, it was to late to get someone tonight to cover it.
I know listening to parents talk at work that a lot of kids don't pay their parents back.
A couple years ago my granddaughter was going to youth camp and her other grandma had given her some money for spending and she left it at her dads, so I gave her the money to replace it and told her that she could pay it back to me when she went to her dad's again...her stepmother spent it! When my GD told her she had to have it to pay me back she told her 'your grandma doesn't expect you to pay it back!'...apparently, we have done something right because GD was very upset about it and when she got the money back finally, she paid me back. She is 10.
thanks for your response.

When I borrow money from my mother, I pay her back. But when she borrow from me, I don't ask her to return it. She don't voluntarily pay it either. LOL! But it's ok. I also don't ask my siblings to pay me when they borrow money from me. I consider it a help.

Hi christmas
If we borrow from our kids, definitely we will repay them, not that we have taken and returning the money, but we want them to understand that, if we take or borrow something from someone, it should be returned promptly. If they take from us also we ask them to return. and they will do it promptly.

If I owe my parents no matter how big or small it is I always make sure that I will pay it back. But my parents owe me, they never did but I am not complaining though I just consider it my counter part for them. They are the one who brought me into this world so I think it is just fair to help them and give some contributions.

I owe my oldest daughter 49cents right now for a box of salt. We have had large amounts, I paid for my youngest house trailer (used) and she has paid me all of it back. I am so proud of my kids cause they don't expect. I am sure your parents appreciate you very much and I really hope they pay you back. I have been fortunate and not had to borrow from my kids or if I did it wasn't much or long. Thank you for your response.

no i don't pay them back just take care of them .its good to take care of the younger generations and donating it on public funds than giving it to them it was their job to take care of them when we were young .you are going to do the same to your kids .dont make parenting a business ....1 thing i can be sure of if you give them with love.they ll give u back with love ..
