Friends in these days of increasing fuel cost, and pollution, we think of vehicles that run on other than petrol, diesel, and LPG gas; like rechargeable battery. Each has its own merits and demerits. I even read news that said ‘water’ as fuel using a special kit. But now this Air powered Car. And now this ‘Air Car’. Here are the details, see the picture of the car too.
Tata Motors is taking giant strides and making history for itself. First the Landrover-Jaguar deal, then the world's cheapest car and now it is also set to introduce the car that runs on air, compressed air.
The Air Car, developed by ex-Formula One engineer, uses compressed air, as opposed to the gas-and-oxygen explosions of internal combustion models, to push its engine's pistons. Some 6000 zero- emissions Air Cars are scheduled to hit Indian streets by August 2010.
The Air Car, called the MiniCAT could cost around Rs.139, 700 at UDD3, 000.00 in India and would have a range of around 300 km between refuels. The cost of a refill would be about Rs. 85 ($ 2).
The MiniCAT which is a simple, light urban car, with a tubular chassis that is glued not welded and a body of fiberglass powered by compressed air. Microcontrollers are used in every device in the car, so one tiny radio transmitter sends instructions to the lights, indicators etc.
There are no keys - just an access card which can be read by the car from your pocket.
The running cost, well it costs less than 50 rupees per 100Km (about a tenth that of a petrol car). Its mileage is about double that of the most advanced electric car (200 to 300 km or 10 hours of driving),
The car has a top speed of 105 kmph. Refilling the car will, once the market develops, take place at adapted Petrol stations to administer compressed air. In two or three minutes, and at a cost of approximately 100 rupees, the car will be ready to go another 200-300 kilometers.
Well at present I have a Maruti van, my birthday is August 19th, my sons have promised to present this car to me. I feel so excited.
Which car, bike or scooter you use or you prefer to travel by public vehicles, hired taxi cabs? How much you spend in fuels or taxi fare etc? Please share your views and comments.

I love the idea of an air powered car. I think this would be something that we would like to have in our family, but as you've mentioned, this technology is starting with the Indian streets so it could be a while before the technology is available to us in the United States. I think that the world as a whole needs to think about different means of powering engines and seeing if there is a viable method to replace all means of petrol fuel.

I was having the idea that you have it there already, we are technically behind western countries..
Thanks for sharing.
Welcome always.

I'm wondering how the air gets compressed before its pumped into the car's airtank? It takes energy to compress air, and are we just shifting the dirty energy emissions from the car back to the patrol Station? If so, nothing is gained as far as clean air and climate change is concerned. My thoughts ~ the ultimate would be solar energy, producing electricity, to recharge the cars batteries. This would be 100% clean energy, cheaper to produce than compressed air, and better for the climate.

hi professor its a wonder no one has come up with this in the US but I guess all the oil companies would have a fit about an air car. It sounds to me like a great idea whose time has come at last. I do not drive so when I need to go to my doctor or have other appointments I have our nurse call access bus.its run by the s ame company that supplies the city bu ses bu t this takes you to your appointment right to the door, comes back i n an hour and takes you to the door of the place where you live. It costs me
five dollars and forty cents but is a boon to me as they can help me on and off the bus if need be, and I do not have to take three different buses to get to my appts. I m partly handicapped physically so its hard for me on the city buses. I look forward to seeing more about these air cars.

dear professor,
with the modern technology, inventors have very good change of making cars work with air as fuel.
i remember reading an article about a filipino engineer-inventor who is able to make the car travel using water as fuel.
but the government, as far as everyone knows, had no political will hence, did not back up the idea because they get rich on gasoline and diesel.
read on this source and tell me it is possible: http://www.articlesbase.com/cars-articles/running-cars-on-water-462420.html

Anny dear i have talked about this water as a fuel and running cars using a special kit, it is theoritically possible, i wonder why it has not come to market yet..
Thanks for sharing.

This is a breakthrough technology!
Can they make this also available in other countries like the Philippines? We need cars like this. The air pollution here is at its worst. I am just afraid some selfish powerful businessmen from the petroleum industry will use their money and power to oppose the proliferation of cars like this...

I belive this ne Tecnology CAT has existed since 1996. Browse on you tube there are many videos explaining this technology.
Back on 2002 Guy Negre (creator) and Ciril Negre sold the usage of the technology to TATA motors tu use only in India.
This new technology is NEEDED no more use of petrolum although I believe the real people not wantening this technology are the ones who control teh Petrolum
I cheer for the GREEN cars
Thanks for the info
