My Son's Sports Day - But Not As It Used To Be :(

Times are changing all the time, and this is another example of how things have changed considerably. It might sound right, and I am sure that in a way it is, but it also seems that everything is changing to make everyone and everything we do overprotective.
Let me explain:
Tomorrow is my son's sports day at his school. I love to watch him, as he loves sports, and it is great fun sitting there cheering him on. But, when I was at school our sports day consisted of different races... like the sack race, the egg and spoon race, relay races, normal running races and of course the fun three legged race. But, now these races are no longer able to be a part of the sports day, except the normal running race... and why??? Because of Health and Safety reasons. I can understand to a point, because of course I guess injuries could come about, due to falling over in the sack and spraining a leg or something, but the fun factor has gone, which I think is quite sad for the kids. I used to love the races at my sports day, but my son has never experienced anything like that. Now for their sports day, they do a running race, but the whole school gets put in teams, and all over the field are different games to play, that each team has to win points for, and then at the end of sports day, the team that has won the most points wins. While this is also fun, and the kids so enjoy it, I actually miss the fun factor of the old style sports day races.
What do your kids do on sports day? Did you ever have fun in your sports day? What do you think about the Health and Safety issues that have been put in place these days??

Hi Rosie, Our schol sports day is Thursday and I have a list of all the activities for the younger ones and will then list for the older, it seems that Health and Safety work differently at different schools. Right sons year Football dribble, bean bag throw, running race, track, bean bag balance, obstacle course, track relay, chest push. Older kids, tennis travel, bouncing game, sprints, football game, javelin throw, strides and triple jump. Think javelin would be ruled out by your school eh! Have uploaded a picofmy son at last years sports day with his lucky mascot Andrex

Aww, thats a cute lil boy you have there Ellie!! Love the Pup too. I am looking forward to his sports day... last year he even won the race. Some of the games that you mentioned above are some of the games that Jason's school will be playing. It is a good interaction for them, because they mix the whole school up so the youngest play on a team with the eldest etc, and so there is a lot of cheering on of each other, so their team wins.

Hi it happened in my boarding school days too. until my 5 th grade i used to top all the prizes and my grandpa would be cheering so gloriously seeing his grandson I in fact won every events and my class mates would be stunned . But since 6 th grade as you mentioned the sports all changed and i never won a single prize than on i couldn't look into my grandpa's face I in fact borrowed a trophy from my friend and showed him it was mine I was that embarrassed to perform such a act and my school made me feel that guilty . which hurts me till date

hi rosie that sports day thing with the three legged races and all those other ones are the same things we used do as I was growing as a child and teen. we had a Town festival day with picnic food where everyone brought their favorite thing to fix and then we had all those old races. the spoon and egg, relay and three legged race. and we had adult sections, little kids sections, and teen sections and we the whole families would have so much fun; town people and country people all playing togetherand sharing tons of food too. My own son missed all that as those kinds of days were not held In Arizona or California either Also I remember we
had a real steam calliope that played over the waves.

I never voted for this coalition government we have now but something they are looking into is how Health and Safety regulations have gone too far. This is something we are crying out for in this increasingly stifled environment we find ourselves in. Can't enjoy ourselves anymore! Yours is a brilliant example of something they want to change; they want kids to be competitive again and not feel guilty about winning a race or whatever. This "participation" sh*te really has to stop.
As for sack races..I absolutely hated being in a sack but loved watching others struggle in them! That's the whole point...the fun element. We didn't sit there and think "Oh dear, what if my friend falls over, what shall we do?" instead we laughed.
Surely that's what Sport's Day is all about; not to be taken too seriously?
