There are many great players in the role. Zinedine Zidane, Dennis Bergkamp, Roberto Baggio, to name a few of the era gone by. Ronaldino, Kaka, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Messi, a few who are still plying their trade. In my opinion, I think Zindane is the best that I have seen so far.

i am talking about midfielders those who set up game by passing ball........
Messi,bergkamp, ronaldinho are wingers or strikers....that's why........
i chose scholes..........i thing fabregas is awesome and he is the best playmaker at this time........i totally admires kaka but he plays like a supporting striker....
xavi and xabi alonso are also very good passers of the ball.......and zidane is a legend and i have not seen much of him........BTW which is your favourite club......

In my opinion the best play maker ever is Zinedine Zidane. He was incredibely talented and had a great vision on the pitch. On the other hand he was a dedicated professional and a role model except his final match against Italy:)

I am sorry, if you think Paul Scholes is a play maker, then I have to disagree big time with you... He is a good holding midfielder who will put in crunching and often stupid tackles and score you fantastic goals from the midfield, but playmaker!! that too all time!!
My favorite is definitely Maradona and off the new lot, Messi who bring other players into play. Another understated playmaker is Xavi of Spain who really runs the show for the Spanish.
