Dress Code in Churches

Philippines
July 4, 2010 9:31am CST
Today, in our Parish Church it was announced that everyone should follow a dress code. No more sleeveless, shorts, slippers etc. I wonder what will happen next week. I doubt that everybody will follow the no slippers rule. I've been going to the same Church for over 9 years now and it's the 1st time they are implementing this rule and it's about time. In Bohol, when you go to Churches there, you are not allowed inside if you are wearing shorts, they will let you borrow a long skirt instead. I think it's only but respect. Let's see what's going to happen next week. Does your Parish Church implement the same rule?

Same here, our parish asks us to wear decent clothes. But still, many wear sexy clothes such as spaghetti. Yeah, I've heard about the Bohol thingy. I can still remember my friend, she attended a Santa Cruzan and wore shorts. After the parade, they headed to church. All of the people at the church were staring with their dragon eyes at her. hahaha. lols. :)

I think it is in the eyes of the beholder rather than that of those that wear such clothes.Period.

As i am from a south-Asian country and we have a custom and traditions of not too expose our body in front of others and to keep our chastity especially the womens. But the Holy Bible gives us the same teachings that women should also cover their head while the prayers, but now a days no body bothers it.Secondly if a person goes to meet some celebrity,Minister or any of his favorite personality than he or she would be properly dressed and decently so why not he or she can be decently dressed when they know that they are going in front of the King of the Kings.

Actually the scripture about women covering their head has to do with their hair. I Corinthians 11:3-15 this is talking about praying and prophesying. Many Roman and Greek women shaved or cut their hair very short and if a woman's hair length was not longer than the average man she shamed herself and her husband. VS:14 does not nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a dishonor to him? ( Christ did not wear his hair overly long as some believe but after the fashion of the day of those not in the military it was about shoulder length or a little bit above) vs 15 But if a woman has long hair it is a glory to her, for her hair is given to her for a covering. A man could come before God shorn or with shorter hair and it was okay he humbled himself before God and was not ashamed but a woman being shorn or short haired was dishonorable to God and his authority. Long hair is part of a woman's beauty and glory. Women today wear their hair much shorter than they really should and men much longer at times. Women of Christs day wore their hair to below the shoulders and middle of their back or longer.

It was not only the church where you belong that are implementing this rule but all the churches in the Philippines. It was the Archdiocese of Manila who issued these guidelines for the parishioners' guidance only. But sometimes, the parish workers who implements these guidelines in their parishioners are overreacting or having harsh actions of not allowing someone inside the church for not wearing proper dress. The church was only prompted to issue these guidelines because some church goers complains of parishioners who wear skimpy shorts, short skirts and spaghetti tops that distracts others while attending and hearing the mass. Slippers were not even mentioned in the guidelines. In our churches here in Laguna, guidelines were posted in the bulletin boards of the churches but lay workers doesn't say a word to the churchgoers. Being religious and believer of God, we should give respect to our Lord God and also to the parishioners who were affected while talking to God. Would you believe that the Catholic Church is very lax in these dress thing? We can see that the board-again members use to wear white tops with sleeves and colored pants or blouses on Sunday service? What about the Baptists - their women wear blouses almost up to their ankle when they go to their church. And the Mormons too have their own uniform. What about INC, how do we see them on their day of the Lord? Looks like we Catholics are far behind when it comes to showing our respect to our Lord God when we worship Him in His House on Sundays.

Our church doesn't have a strict dress code, instead, it is up to people to dress in their own good taste. What this means is that people should dress in a way that they aren't illiciting feelings from other people that they don't want to bring forth. For me, it means that I will wear either a skirt or slacks to church and a shirt that is very modest. When I travelled to Italy when I was a teenager there were churches that a woman couldn't enter if she was wearing shorts and thus during the week that I was there I wore almost exclusively dresses.

We have a dress code here in our parish but we still see people not following. In order to avoid more people not wearing proper outfit, when its time to receive the communion the female who wears spaghetti strap dress were given a cloth to cover their shoulders or their legs. The movement for dress code is a good practice

As a tourist, I have visited mosques in Turkey, Malaysia and some other countries. If you are not appropriately attired, i.e. just wearing singlets and shorts, you are given additional clothing (like a sarong or shawl) at the door to cover yourself discreetly before entering the mosques premises. This is a show of respect that you are entering sacred grounds and modesty (as a dress code) should be the order of the day. Granted that God looks at the heart of men and dressing should be secondary. But to accord respect to the Highest and as a norm, some thought should be given to our dressing going to church, quite different from going shopping or others. Unless of course there is some mitigating reason.

This kind of request has been around for quite some time. The only problem is that people still like to wear clothes that are inappropriate for church services. Its giving due respect to God and the church as an institution.

A dress code in church is the stupidest idea I have ever heard of! God is supposed to love all people, no matter how they are dressed. Implementing a dress code will only cause some people to not attend because they do not have the money to follow the code. This is discrimination which is not supposed to be what god and the church is about. Every time I hear about things like this, it turns me even more away from religion and the BS that is involved in this form of controlling people instead of focusing on what is it supposed to be!

no, there is no such rule here. But people here are very decent. They know very well how to be dressed when they come to church. It is very important to dress in a decent manner when you come to Church. The church is a holy place. Its a place of worship. So wearing revealing clothes may disturb the peace and attention of people there. Every matured person should have the understanding that party wear should be used only in party's and not church.

We go to church to worship in our faith. We don't go there to be told how to dress. We should show some respect in the way we dress for our attendance ion church services, but I don't think a dress code is needed for this.

I am actually guilty of wearing slippers like flip flops but then our church has implemented a rule but not strict as other church. I would actually agree that shorts must not allowed although I've been wearing that as well inside the church. Well good thing they did not implement to wear formal dresses like we have to wear long skirts, polo or blouse instead of t-shirt.

Im not going to agree with the implementation they are having. I myself do not follow a dresscode when i go to church but do not wear home clothes when i go to one. I do not know about my parish but they have it implemented and not seriously which means they do not check what people are wearing when they come in. It all actually depends on you.

The dress code wasn't new to me, in our religion we were not allowed to enter the church if the boys is not wearing a "polo" and slacks. While the girls must wear also their proper attire as well. And i think that was a good manners ruled by the church that must be followed by the members of the church to have a solemnly worship.

I am a member of a Independent Fundamental Baptist church. We have a dress code that members of the church must follow for all church functions. The Holy Scriptures are the basis for the dress code guidelines, dressing in modest attire being the standard. The House of God is a holy place for worship, we should dress accordingly. Visitors of course would not be aware of the dress code, so there is some understanding given.

i think that yes, it's about time that such rules are implemented. first, you are worshiping, not malling, not making a fashion statement and definitely not just lounging at home. so slippers, shorts ,... no matter how comfortable your wardrobe is, it isn't what you're supposed to wear at a church. i think that this is also a matter of respect. if you wear skimpy clothing, you attract attention to yourself thus people will not be concentrating on what the speaker/pastor/priest is saying up front. it's very inconsiderate if you think that those people are perverts because they look at you. no, it's the other way around. they cant help but look at you because of what you are wearing. so i guess, you should be considerate and respectful that people want to worship& pray in the church. you must not be the one to ruin that experience for them. i think that we should all try to wear our best clothes. if God suddenly comes down, what do you like him to see you wearing? Would you like him to see you with your cleavage showing or your legs scantily covered? I suppose not. We should all wear decent, Sunday church clothes. if you talk about the 'poor people' who we could say dont have anything to wear. well, what theyre wearing are their best clothes and they are much better than us because they wear what they could to present themselves well for church.

I think that they should be a little lax on there rules. I believe that as long as you are presentable the attire you wear won't matter. As long as you go to church for the right reasons your attire won't matter.

Yes our Parish implemented that rule also; only there are some people who did not follow the rules or let's just say don't want to follow the rules. Of all the religions, Roman Catholic is not so strict with implementing rules. But for me the rules are good for the sake of respecting the Supreme Being. We dress nicely when we go to occasions that we think we need to then why not dress formally and decently when we go to visit our Lord in His house.

Yes in our religion we do have A Dress code, it is not a big deal not to follow, because i think its a must to have a dress code.,its like attending a Party, if Formal, then just wear formal, if Casual then wear casual, its like a uniform in a school or an Office...So simple, why not follow..Church is a worshiped Place, one must wear Proper Attire..

yes, i am sure that everybody will not follow. But in some point, i do agree that we should have a proper dress to wear in churches and dress codes in churches shall be promoted all over the world. First what will we do when we go to church? To pray to God, right? Church is the proper place for us to thank God according to some Priests. But how will you going to pray, or how will you going to concentrate on praying when someone has or wears an attractive, sexy dress. Your eyes and our focus will be cut, and we will forced to look at her instead. That is maybe the reason why Parish Church implement those rules and yes, in my country we also have the same dress codes as you have.

i think its necessity. its a church and we are facing god. God is not a symbol of any rude things but its a symbol of cherish and passion. wearing proper clothes in church is one of the best rules that churches need to implement. even we dont have choice but we need to do for the sake of god. its a holy house of him so that we are going to follow that god's rule. thanks anyway hope i share my thoughts.
