Where does the saying knock on wood come from?

I have heard the saying thousands of times but I never knew how and where it got started. Does anybody have any info?

I really dont know. I wish I could tell you. But I am sure its an old wives tale. It probably originated because there were was mostly wooden floors so its the most common thing to relate it to everyone.
