Do you like stories with open endings?

I just read a Danish novel, it is a story about a boy who ended up inside a well when he was a few years old. His mother found him, but no one knows how he got there. He remembers a face of a woman and he thinks that she forced him into the well and that she meant to kill him. About 10 years later he returns to the place and tries to find out what happened when he was a child. I liked the first part of the story, it made me curious and I wanted to keep on reading so that I could find out what actually happened, but the last part of the book was pretty disappointing. There were a lot of loose ends and I was left with a lot of questions. The story had an open ending, and there were many things I didn't understand. Do you like stories with open endings? Why/why not? Do you get frustrated if there are too many loose ends or do you like to ponder the possibilies and draw your own conclusions?

I have watched movies like that. It is annoying when you have spent a lot of time on watching a movie and it ends in a crazy way. When that happens I sometimes try to find reviews or information about the movie online in order to understand the movie better. Sometimes I get very surpriced when I read about the movie, because I got a totally different impression when I watched it.

No, I definitely do not like stories with open ending. I have read a bunch of books that end like that and it is really stupid... What? I gotta make the end by myself. This is stupid. I have read books, I have heard stories and I have watched movies with open ending, they all suck, I love to finish the things until the end and I like to watch things until the end including open ended.

In some ways i agree with you but why not to make your own ending? Yeah in some cases it is really boring but otherwise it is fun to become an author of the book. So whatever you have read bunch of books I have read thousands of books with open ending and i liked them all!!!!

The most famous story of this type I know can be found at http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/LadyTige.shtml The Lady or the Tiger There is even a Wikipedia article on it, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lady,_or_the_Tiger%3F The argument for these kinds of endings is that it is up to the reader. We are dealing with fiction, so does it really matter? The writer can show one's preference and end it all, but what would it say if it ended another way? What if there really was no answer? The DVD of the movie Paranormal Activity show an alternative ending. That would be the opposite question, having two endings instead of just one, or none. Come to think of it, wasn't there a comedy mystery some time ago about a detective attempting to solve a murder in a locked house, and coming up with a half dozen possibilities at the end. Then it invited the audience to think of other possibilities. I suppose it is just a matter of taste. And my tastes changes every moment or two, so whatever I answer will change anyway.

Thank you very much for the links. I didn't know the story, but I found it very interesting. I like that kinds of thought experiments. It is a difficult question, and it is interesting to think about the possibilities. I often find open endings frustrating, but in this story I like the open ending. In the past I have read a couple of stories where there were more than one ending. Those stories were different from most of the other stories that I have read, but I liked reading something different.

Indeed stories that force the reader to think about why the author chose to conclude the story in the manner he did is excellent for getting a good reading experience. It enables the reader to ponder and really let a story linger. If the author knows what he's doing, then an open ended story may make the reader want a sequel.

I don't like that either. When I am watching a great movie, I am curious to find out what happens, and I don't like to wait a week or more to find out what the end is...

Sometimes yes, and sometimes no. When the open ending is just perfect there, then I'm not disappointed - I like to write, and like to fantasize, and an open ending gives me enough material to do both things, I like it. But sometimes I just feel that the writer left the ending open so that he/she can come back with another book and, to be honest, there are really few sequels that actually satisfy me, they often just totally ruin the book.

Open ending of a story may be interesting. The writer can switch over to other story. In your said novel if the boy could find out the woman who wanted to kill him, then the story ended there. I don't know what was the motive of that novelist.

I don't like open endings at all. I like stories that end at least somewhat resolved. I prefer a story that ends badly over a story that has no true ending. I don't like to draw my own conclusions about what happens, because to me that's like writing the end of someone else's story. I'd prefer to like it or hate it, and not feel like I have to pick up a pen and write it myself.

It can be frustrating when the story doesn't have an ending. I remember one story that I read online, it was a great story and I couldn't stop reading, because I was so curious to find out what happened, but I never found out. When the story ended the reader was simply told that the main character never found out what happened, that ruined the story for for me, and I was pretty disappointed.

Sounds like the way I felt when finishing loads of open-ended books. I'd like to have the endings at least somewhat resolved. If there are still a few questions, that's okay... but if nothing is answered than I feel pretty bitter when I put down the book. I really don't like making up my own ending, because that's not satisfying at all. If I wanted to write my own ending to a story, then I would've written the whole book to begin with.
