What's the point of working on July 5th, 2010?

I was upset that I had to miss fireworks last night (4th of July) to be stuck at work the next morning at 6:45 AM sharp, only to realize that the store I work at (dry cleaners) has been open for almost an hour, and we have had NO BUSINESS come in. I was also talking to friends, my bro-in-law and my parents, and all of them have work off today, it's apparently considered a "holiday" by most companies standards. What about you? Are you working today? And is it an utter waste of time, too?

Hello Maezee, I'm so sad to hear that you're working on holidays now. I had a lot of that for four years. I worked for four years on nightshifts following US business hours. So I have experienced working during a lot of Philippine holidays and even Christmas eve and New Years Eve. I spent a lot of Christmases and New New Years in the office. You should get a replacement time off for that. lol Cheers, Honey

I unfortunately had to work today also! Our fireworks weren't last night though, unfortunately. They did them some random night last week and I was out of town. I didn't get to see any fireworks this 4th of July which kinda sucks! Oh well!

I'm sorry that you had to work Monday. And yes, most companies would consider that a holiday. No surprise that you didn't see many customers. You should have at least been paid time and a half. Do the owners know? Or does your boss know that it is supposed to be a holiday?

I'm from Europe and here everybody is working. We doesn't celebrate 4th of July (it is American tradition)... However, I think it is stupid to work on 5th of July. No point. After the national day of freedom (?) you can't just celebrate and watch fireworks when you know you have to go to work the other day.

in my line of work today is a very busy day but only because most people have the day off, but it would seem that unless your business is in entertainment today should be treated like a sunday with little business coming throught the doors, i seem to realize that this tends to put me in a bad mood.

Hi maezee, Well after a long gap I am responding at mylot. And luckily it happened to be you. lol. So far working on 5th July or at any date depends on some specific circumstances. You have said yours. And possibly there would be more who your experience. But as it goes with me. there is nothing that I should not work on 5th. This is as usual for me and I was not stuck anywhere nor my situation permits that I remain absent from my work. This is all individual. Actually nothing happens, no body comes or no body goes. It is terrible. The wheel of life goes the same direction for everybody but people's perceptions are different.

Lucky that I am a housewife and do not need to go through all these problems of going to office. It is really sad for you though. All it is in India today there was a countrywide strike so my hubby also did not go to office.
