Till now i felt french fries was a vegetarian food. I recently heard that they mig it with some pig fat to make it tasty. I dont know how far this is true. Nevertheless it is one most eaten side dish in the world. I see this as a very common food anywhere in US. From McDonalds to Burger king wherever i go i see this as an important side dish. Its really tasty and tempting to eat more too. Its the best food item made out of potato. I have also taken hash browns which is also a good dish. Share ur thoughts on the same.

In the olden days they use to be fried in lard.
Nowadays companies will pre-fry (It gives them a crispy outer shell as well as reduces time to cook them) then flash freeze to ship to the fast food joints that then fry them up to cook.
It all depends on what they pre-fry them in - and not even the peopel who work for McD's knows what it is.
I personally will boil them in water that I've flavored with a little bullion then pre-fry, then let them cool for a bit then fry them up to eat.

French fries is everywhere and almost everybody loves to eat this potato thing. It is really tasty and crunchy as it was deep fried in a very hot temperature cooking pot. But sure it is a vegetarian food as I feel it doesn't contain any animal fat except vegetable oil. And for it to become more tasty, I think they are pouring and mixing too much MSG while preparing the potato to be cooked.

I do not think they use animal fat these days because there's a special odour to it if it's used. The fries are made with vegetable cooking oil, most likely palm oil since it's the most economical of all. However being deep fried cause oxidation to the oil which is not healthy for our hearts and blood vessels. I would rather have mashed potoato or boiled potato instead, it taste as great as fries

I always make my own french fried popatoes or the hashed potatoes (aren´t they wonderful?). But I can´t eat them at fast food places as it upsets my stomach. I have come to the conclusion that the difference is in the oil I use. I use only sunflower oil (or soya oil). But I´m sure at those places they must use other fats as my way of doing it is a lot more expensive. I do save a oil and reuse it, but not many times. Even then, it´s better than the fat used at fast food chains. My body tells me.
Take care and happy posting!

I have worked at McDonald's and read the ingredients and there was nothing about pigs in there it just said potatoes. The only thing they use for flavoring is a few shakes of salt. They go in vegetable oil and get all fried up until they are ready. then they are served with some salt on them like I said before. Not really anything that could be about animal fat except the rest of the food

it is vegetarian, but sometimes they fry them in animal fat to make it tasty. but now-a-days people became more health conscious and the restaurants became money conscious so they are using more content of vegetable fat instead of animal fat which is cheaper and a bit more healthy.

i don't know if that's true, but if that's true, i think have to control my french fries eating habit now. Yeah, its been everywhere, its really delicious, tasty and yummy so its definitely addictive. I hope i'll never get sick because of too much potatoes with some pig fat lol.
Thanks for the topic
Much respect

i think there maybe some animal fat in it in the olden days.. but now, with most of those multinational franchises advocating 'healthy food' and stuff, i think they're more into vegetable oils instead..
