Someone tells me that "When we grow older, not too many things can make us very happy".
I just don't like this statement, and I totally disagree with this, I just think this kind of statement always come from someone having negative thinking. What do you think?
Do you need something very special to make yourself happy?
I don't, I am really happy that I am now still alive and doing what I am doing.
I would really appreciate your response^^

I actually disagree with this statement too, I actually have found that I am happier as I grow older, and perhaps you gain more insight and wisdom, you begin to really value things that you have around you and not take them for granted. More than before I have become more grateful that I am alive and give more value to the little things that we have in life, and that it's not just 'there' - so many things are amazing and a miracle and we don't realise that not many people get to see it in their lifetime, so I am always very appreciative of what we have...:)

Experience is a two edge sword. For one, it gives us enough lessons on how to deal with matters on a daily basis. On the other hand, it makes us wary on impending circumstances that may come our way. When we grow older, we think more often, we reason more often, we weight out things more and we justify our thoughts and actions more. It is a wall that is built everytime age adds up.
For me, happiness is brought about by how we are satisfied or what can satisfy us, and the way we see things on a small scale. For example, a child being given a toy will be happy enough because of he has a new toy to play with, as simple as that. Meanwhile, two persons are given the same things, let's say a desktop computer, one is happy about the blessing while that other one may not be so because of the things he doesn't like about the computer. It's all about how you look at things. The bigger you look for something the more difficult you will be pleased, the more difficult you will be happy.

Hello lantisred
I maybe not tend to look things at the big picture. Bad experiences has taught me that life can be hell, but I learn I should appreciate what life gives me, and this is life and make it so special for me, I started to learn it is much more comfortable to be a happy positive guy than be a hard-to-please negative guy. Life is more about happiness then others.

hi hellomickey no its a stupid statement as I am 83 and I still find a lot of things make me happy. I am going shopping tomorrow with the other residents to Walmart and that makes me very happy; I am seeing my best friend after her work tomorrow and that makes me happy , I am still alive and so grateful and that makes me happy. I dont need anything sp ecial as my own happiness comes from within and nobody can make me happy as I have to want to be happy first. Thats really not a good statement for elderly pe ople at all.

Hello Hatley
The statement comes from a friend of mine, she is younger than me, maybe that's why I dislike it very much. I am older and may view things very different from her.
My grandma is 84 and she acts strange lately, like complain on everything, refuse to have meals, and keep moaning. I am wonder why she changes so fast, as she was very positive and optmistic when she was young. I think it might be skepting meals or she is aging that her mind can't function normally.
You are correct that we can't really find happiness when we want to be happy at first. I agree^^
Thank you for your comment.

Hello Cutie18f
Let's do it together!!!!Reverse all this and being young again.
You are right, many friends around me changes a lot, one of the changes is they losing their sense of humor, almost everyone is trying to be cool and look smarter that others. ^^
Thank you for your comment.

Oh no no no not at all!!!
I am almost 60 but every day I am made to feel happy at a simple pleasure from life.
I think I am appreciating smaller things more and more as I get older.
Yesterday I went to visit my grandchildren - SO much pleasure from hugs and kisses and watching silly dances and listening to little songs.
I am feeling happy more as I get older because I appreciate it more.

Hello oldchem1
Same here. I feel happy even for very little things, after few years of bad experiences before, after I went 30, I told myself I should never complain on how my life is, I learn to appreciate the joy of my life.
I am glad that you feel happy everyday, I hope that I can do this when I reach 60 like you.
Very appreciate for your response.

The more older we grow the more experience we gain....and we are not satisfied easily as we know lots of things. if we are told something we would noy agree easily as we have seen more of the world.

Now, is this 'someone' who said this to you a happy person , a person who is happy for every little thing even when he/she is young?
But one thing-- old age alone is not likely to make a person unhappy; it is the level of good health and dependence on others that would have an impact.
I have seen my old father who was paralysed for 18 years , bedridden for one and a half year and never was he really unhappy. THere were very few times when he had shown frustration ; but they were very negligible and this too came in only when he became really weak and infirm.Till that he fought against the disability and was self dependent to the maximum extent possible.to him.

Hello kalav56
I totally agree with what you said. Your father is so strong to face his own health problem, and he treats his life in an optimistic mood. And we all do have time feeling ourselves feeble, only a really positive men/women would eventually stand up again and face their lifes positively.
Thank you for your response.

I would definitely disagree with that. How happy we are is not dependent on age. I think a lot of happiness depends upong circumstances. But I think we can have joy at any age. This is something that we can practice when we are young, and when we are very old. Having joy instead of happiness can be a choice, and I actually think the older we are, the more likely we are to make an effort to have that.

Thank you for your response. You are right, we should all appreciate the joy of life. I also think I become much mmore better after I grow older, and that's what I am so proud of myself, also I feel happy for being the present "me". ^^

Yes i agree. When we grow old we experience a lot. This causes us to get tired of that experience that we search for something that tops that experience therefore raising our threshold and there are certain hindrances that can limit us from getting higher threshold experiences that's why we just settle for what we have and can attain giving us the impression that there are fewer things that can make us happy when we grow old.

Hello frontvisions101
I agree that we experience a lot when we grow old, like we may be excited if we first went to a theatre to watch a film when we were children but not when we are now all adults.
I easily feel happy with what I got, maybe I set my threshold a lot lower than others^^
Thank you for your response.

I totally don't agree with that statement. We can be very happy in our whole life. It's depend on how we enjoy our life. The happiness that we feel when we were kid is different with happiness when we older. For instance, we feel happy if our parent give us toys that we want. After grow older, perhaps we feel happy when our love are accepted by our girl or boy. It's up to you, how to enjoy this life to reach happiness

I totally disagree with that statement. That sounds like a negative person. Life is what we make it. If we are miserable then we will lead a miserable life. If we are happy than we will lead a happy life. As we get older i feel life gets better. We are wiser and more established and able to enjoy life much more because of those two things alone. Life is a blessing at any age!

Hello Neicy30
Me as well think that the friend of mine was being so negative when she told me this statement. Life is what we create for ourselves, I like your said "Life is a blessing at any age", we all should find contentment in our own life.
Thank you for our comment.

Well there is some truth about that statement. Kids can easily become happier than adults. You just buy them their favorite toy or food and will become very happy. As to older people, it's harder please them. But it doesn't mean they can't be happy, just harder. You can make them happy but not as happy as you can make a kid.
It has something to do with their innocence. As adults we have many problems, and we deal with so many things.

Hello damned_dle
Yes, you are right, childern are easily pleased and adults have to deal with so many things, that's life. But I don't like people always moaning and telling others they are not happy with what they got. This statement comes from a best friend of mine, she got promoted the beginning of this year, she bought a very grand house last year and bought a new car lately, just don't know why she always complains and tell others nothing gonna make her happy. I told her don't be sad, as we all should appreciate our lifes.
Thank you for your response^^

Depend to ourselves , If we put our life affliction on shoulder always ,then when we grow older ,not too many things can make us very happy, but if we put our life problems at God's hand for help. Then the older we are the happier we are.
