How does a computer keep time?

With no internet and when it is turned off.

There is a small round,cylindrical battery fixed on the motherboard only. It needs to be replaced after every 7-10 years.I guess one seldom need to replace it.:)

Is very simple: ALL motherboards have a battery which "keep" the clock and bios settings. See the picture attached.

I think that is where the CMOS battery comes in. The computer clock will continue as long as the CMOS battery is OK. Try to search on the internet because that is just my guess.
