I'm an architecture student too and about to have my thesis (well hopefully) next year. Usually my friends who already took up thesis go to City Development and Planning Office and ask for the "Comprehensive Land Use and Zoning Plan". Then after reading that plan, they will be able to come up with a proposal that is best needed in that certain city. Depending on what site you will choose.
well of course, it'll be very nice if you'll come up to a design that is sustainable since that is what our world needed nowadays and not because it's the trend. :)
Good luck with your thesis, :)

First of all, ask the nearest city hall for the projects they are planning in your city. It will give you a higher chance to defend your thesis proposal since it is already planned at the beginning.
The trend nowadays especially in UST are vernacular architecture, sustainable and green development and native or filipino designs.
When choosing sustainable or green development, you need to study the latest innovative materials and methods on reducing energy usage, promoting less carbon usage (including vehicle used for deliveries, concrete and others)
Research is very essential in doing your thesis so be sure you are up to date with the latest trends without forgetting how much will that innovative/sustainable material/method will cost.
If you have questions I will gladly help you guys for I got also a hard time looking for leads in my thesis

the worlds yields much garbage everyday.
so why dont create a architectural structural build with one of those trashes.?
Their was once a study conducted here about a cement mixed with stripped plastic/pet bottles. it was sturdy though.
we dont want our world to be full of garbage someday just like in the Disney Pixar movie Wall E.

You can tie up the challenges in architecture with the challenges in our environment---how modern-day architecture can be made to respond to environmental realities--perhaps designing houses that automatically transform into ships or boats in times of floods, etc.
